I have this bag, it's quite tough.

    • Is it heavy?

      • Yeah what is the weight

        • +8

Sorry I only have a bathroom scale so not accurate. I would say guesstimate 300grams? Would you like photos, I can fit both my 15 inch Macbook pro and XPS 17 in fine.

The material is some sort of tough nylon, been on many airplane cabin floors.

      • +9

depends how much you fill it

    • -2

      OK…

Does its main compartment (or, at least,
      a 2nd one, with ~same H & W dimensions)
open from the part nearest to your back
(when wearing it), so a "baddie" has to
remove it from your back to take things
      from that compartment?

Camera gear bag & backpack maker LowePro
has such a feature, with rain protection as well
(which can save your heaps in a big storm).

      • Yes and no.

The zippers go behind the straps so really it's difficult to unzip with it on but it can be done.

See how the bag straps connect to a piece of material that hides the zippers.

      • Practically speaking, yes you have to remove it to open it. You just can't reach the zips otherwise. One bonus is if you put it on the floor (say of an airplane cabin), only the outer shell gets dirty, none of the soft parts. So it's easy to disinfect after.

    Anti-Theft Backpack

What a load of marketing bollocks

    • +7

You can't easily open the zippers while it's being worn.
      So maybe "anti-pickpocketing backpack"?

      • +2

Ohhh I'd always be wondering how it claimed that! Makes sense now. I thought it was meant to be cut resisitent, and I guess it is with the weird angles of it.

        • +23

In the Philippines they just pull out a gun and take the whole bag.

          • +4

@paulaus: or using a razor blade to cut and steal from behind you 😅

            • @webtherapist: Would a bag made of Kevlar (sp?) preclude such thefts?

(Or… is K' only useful to stop (some slower) bullets?)

          • -6

            @paulaus: We've long-ago crossed .PH Off our
            "Might Go There Someday" vacation-
            list (way before COVID' restrictions…).

            (Thanks for reinforcing our decision.)

            Extra-judicial murders of -suspected-
drug users/dealers has to tempt some
to pick a random person (ie, Not using
or dealing) to accuse & be killed, so the
            accuser can "inherit" the accusee's
            valuables.

            Meanwhile… Portugal's decriminalized
drug laws (for users, not dealers) has
            reportedly -decreased- drug-usage by
encouraging users to get clean in a
            heath program… possibly cheaper
than prisons, & certainly more effective.

            See Michael Moore's docu:

            • "Where to Invade Next?"
            • @IVI: lol.

I've heard Somalia has unenforced drug laws.
              You should check it out.

I purchased one of these ages ago and remember seeing a video showing it was cut resistant. Specifically it showed a normal backpack (probably made with the thinnest material) and this bag vs. a Stanley knife. It highlighted some white stuff in the middle layer that couldnt be cut through easily. Also as highlight above the zippers are a pain to open, even when you have the pack off yourself with full access! The bag wasn't super heavy, but i found the internal pockets annoying as on my model it wasn't removable. Also the material the shoulder straps lock through at the bottom is soft but slips constantly!

I ended up buying it for a trip we had planned that included a fair bit of time in Barcelona where pick pockets run riot! All in all I shouldn't have wasted money ($100 at the time) on the bag as I ended up leaving my wallet in the first cab we caught from the airport, but if you need a sub $10 bag then not a bad option at all.

  • This or Xiaomi backpack?

    • Xiaomi Is for kids and even tinier

      • +1

True, its 4L smaller, but last time I saw a sale on aliexpress for a Xiaomi backpack for $6 delivered, couldn't help myself and bought and still hasn't arrived yet

        • My order from that same deal hasn't arrived either…
Fingers crossed that it does arrive eventually.

        • Can you give a model name. I keyed in mi backpack and there are various models available in AliExpress

          • +2

@Bujji11: Here is the listing I got mine from, the deal has expired

            • +1

@jayboi: Around AU$8 for the dark blue delivered is still decent for a smaller handy bag.

              • @ozhunter68: Yeah true, The navy standard one for $8 delivered just sold out. also another question, Is the seller in that listing on aliexpress actually Xiaomi or just a reseller?

                • @jayboi: No idea, I just checked out you link and wondered how much and which colour the cheapest one was.

          • @Bujji11: The Mi backpack is worth about $5. Go to the reject shop instead.

            • @boxall: Same goes for this Catch pack.

      • +1

        and even tinier

Ants? Xiaomi does translate to Little Rice

    • +1

I've used the 10L Xiaomi for over a year now as a kid's day back. Still going strong, zips are still working, and no issues with stitching. They are very small, so would go for the 15L or 20L next time, but the quality is way above what you get a Kmart.

Also, can open the zips without holding the bag, so that is awesome when you are trying to get something out while on the move.

      • Can you upload a picture of the Xiaomi backpack next to something like a bottle? really curious to see how big it is as mine hasn't arrived yet.
        Thanks

        • Not gonna lie, will forget by the time I am home.

Its slightly larger than an A4 paper. Maybe taller.

What are you planning on putting in it?

          • @pformag: Maybe some bathers and towels for the beach or maybe some lunch and a power bank with an iPad, small things really.
the comparison with the A4 paper you gave was really helpful thanks, I think it will be fine then

            • @jayboi: Imagine a full 10 Lt bucket of water, and squeeze it upwards and that is roughly the size.

            • @jayboi: Will struggle with a towel. Not towels…..

It really is small. Real small.

              https://www.wish.com/product/5ed4b6272ec1bd3fb12b07fa?hide_l…

              • @boxall: I might put a small towel in then but I think it’ll be ok if it doesn’t fit a towel, for everyday use I don’t need a towel and I think it will work fine, especially for $6 delivered I really can’t complain

  • Looks solid

Reviews on Catch complain of stitching quickly failing, straps detaching, can't carry much weight, doesn't hold much, …

A reliable well made backpack is a pleasure that can last for years (my free ones from a Deal are about 10 years old & in almost daily use), a poorly made one can be a real pain.

      • I have this backpack, a $100 one and a $300 one. Of course the $300 is made of the most durable nylon and it's fanciest. Which do I prefer to throw on the airplane cabin floor?

        • +2

You know there are overhead compartments in planes😉

When travelling, having straps detach or stitching fail is a real pain! It's happened to me in France with a new name brand one. You need to know you can rely on it, when away from home.

That's why I take a good sturdy but light one (free Ocean & Earth backpack with $14.50 mobile!) when travelling.

I only use carry on, & it's compartments handle all I need for a month, with added clip on dry sack to carry other items. Been doing that for many years with same style bag. (Have a set of 3 still in use.)

Was considering retiring my 9 year old backpacks, but after reading issues in reviews, I'll stick with my tried & tested system. The bags still look good.

          • @INFIDEL: I went back in time to your older comments and see you scored two of those good bags, and the phones were

also able to be unlocked Free too, Score. What were those phones like, I did not get that one back then,

probably no stock near me lol.

      • +1

        I mean it’s $10

        • +1

          Plus $6.95 for Standard Shipping.

Price should make people doubt it's quality! I'm just pointing out there are warnings. As pointed out below, it's a cheap knockoff product.

  • Based on the dimensions this look like it could house a 15 inch laptop. Would this backpack be fit for that purpose?

    • From a Catch review
It is quite small for a 15 inch laptop. Otherwise sufficient enough for tablets and smaller laptops.

      • Thanks mate

        • Other reviews complain about stitching & straps failing - not health for a laptop.

    • +1

killingtime reports he can fit both a 15 inch Macbook pro and XPS 17. Sorry, don't know how to link to his post.

                How did the experiment go?

                • @Tiggrrrrr: Haha, you caught me out. Being school hoidays and all, and we have four weeks to find new rental place

and move out, so bit busy at the moment. Will experiment later tonight if I remember. Thanks for checking in.

There is one more thing I would love to be able to do ( if possible ), when you make a comment replying to

someone elses comment like yours above, to always show the orange other persons name.

With me it only sometimes does that, hit and miss, think I am missing something extra to do.

                    Probably an easier/quicker way though.

                    • @Tiggrrrrr: Thanks. Will experiment with that too then.

@ozhunter68: I think the auto tagging depends on the sub-thread level. Though I'm not sure.

edit: my reply to you was auto-tagged.

  • I think this backpack is worth the price even only for the usb extension cable included that usually goes for around $10 itself! and you get a bag too which is a bonus

  • What's the integrated USB charging about?

    • +6

It just has a usb extension cable included and a little hole that the usb extension cable can run into to go on the outside so the other part of the usb extension cable can connect to a power bank

      • +1

Adding on to this, its best if you have a power bank that automatically turns and off for a more seamless experience. Not sure if most power banks today have this or not - I personally don't use power banks that much.

        • link?

          • +1

@capslock janitor: After doing some research, maybe auto on/off is not as common as I thought. I used a generic non-brand one that had auto on/off (probably not selling anymore), but I don't really use power banks that much anymore so I don't think I can help you with any latest offerings that offer this.

      • Confusing

  • +4

I bought this a few years ago for ~$40 dollars - I got sick of having to open the bag like a sandwhich if i wanted easy access to the bag

    • +1

Catch Reviews also complain about that.

  • +1

Anti-theft backpack? Where is this place that so many backpacks are being stolen that I would need such a thing?
Also if a guy pulls a knife and says give me your backpack, how does this backpack perform over others? I think this product should come with a warning that the purchaser may be extremely gullible and should seek help…

    • It's referring to master pickpocketers

      • +3

I've travelled extensively to a lot of so-called 'pickpocket' hotpots, I've even seen these 'master pickpockets' in action and there's nothing magical or master about them. They target people who are easy victims. The solution is not a gimmicky backpack, it's to keep your wits about you.

        • Yes, Just take a plain old backpack (even better not to use one) & don't attract attention as a likely vulnerable mark.

Being a frugal Ozbargainer, in decades of travelling overseas - I look like a poor mark to target. So never had any problems.

An old robber's trick was to grab the handle on the backpack to bring the person down from behind, then take what they want. It happens so fast, it disorients the person.

          • @INFIDEL: yeah wear the bag on front

            • +2

@capslock janitor: It's the safest way. And easy to access pockets.

Mind you when a Cassowary came too close in a vine forest in North QLD, I was happy to wear my backpack that way. They have a reputation for disembowelling!

              • @INFIDEL: You actually saw one in the wild? Those Cassowarys are hard to come by these days.

Love to see one on a hike in the forest.

                • +1

@ozhunter68: I was staying at a place in the bush at Mission Beach. The owners encouraged them in, leaving mangos & other fruit. So saw a few up close. They're huge!
The chicks got used to seeing me every day, so would come up to me.
But the male looks after them. He came very close & I found there was dense forest behind me. As they are very protective & have poor eyesight, it was worrying. It's the type of situation that can result in an attack.
So was glad to have a sturdy backpack to protect my most vulnerable spots!

        • what's my wits

    • Whack him with the backpack (and the brick you're carrying inside)…

    • +3

Barcelona, London Tube etc. The Kalaidzhi clan from Bulgaria are master pickpockets that infiltrated many countries after joining the EU.

Would much prefer to go for Crumpler that will last for ages.

This is the fake model. Real iterations of this backpack have the USB on the inside.
