What Do You Think about Health Star Ratings on Food?

Hello,

I use to buy food items from the supermarkets considering the health star rating on them. Usually, I eat canned beans for my breakfast which are marked as 5/5 in the coles brands. I'm just wondering whether these health star ratings are true and they depict the real nutritious value of foods. What are people's thoughts on this? Do you also belive health star ratings?

  • ITs fake news, i brought 5 * juice from coles, was 80% imported and tasted like concentrate.

Why isnt 100% australian produced fruit juice 5* ?

I believe the star ratings are a measure of headlines within comparable products, rather than objective healthiness. So it's pretty misleading.

Same as the energy ratings on appliances, the litres per 100k on vehicles and Choice magazine testing and reviews.

    All BS.

They should have product categories, like stars and then below them in big letters "BC" so you know it applies to and compares only with other BC, or Breakfast Cereal, products. Cocopops 1 star, Cheerios 3 stars, Weetabix 5 stars. Or whatever.

As someone else said, as far as making similar products comparable, they should be useful as a guideline. Better than nothing, so you should probably worry about companies that choose not to display star ratings if others in their category do display a rating.

Best to always check the ingredients and sugar, fat, etc. yourself then relying on those labels.

Especially sugar! Also if there is any mention of 'trans fat' on the Ingredients, avoid it like the plague!

      • whabbout included natural sugars thho ??
no differentiation from the added refined stuff?

Don't trust food labels. You'll want to focus on the neglected food groups, e.g. the whipped group, congealed group, and the chocotastic

  • Why the health star rating system is flawed.

THE Health Star Rating system gives foods a score out of five, but its flawed algorithm means a packet of lollies has a better rating than Greek yoghurt.

The more whole food (unprocessed) plant based the food, the healthier. Why don't you start from there and use your judgement instead of relying on someone else, who might have a vested interest?

    Less stars = more tasty

    • Usually more sugar!
