Upgrading Bed - Adjustable Base with King Mattress or Two Long Singles?

I currently have a Sleeping Duck king mattress and Base but I was wanting to upgrade the base to an adjustable base - OneBed or Sealy probably. Disappointingly after speaking to SD, they told me that their mattress would not work well with an adjustable base and may damage the springs. So if I was to change to an adjustable base, I would need to change my mattress also.

King adjustable bases nearly always comes as 2 x long singles. Considering that should I consider getting 2 x long single mattresses instead. I really like the idea that my partner and I could then adjust our sides differently. However I've hated in hotel rooms which have had 2 x singles a lot of the time you could feel the gab.

What would you do?

I wouldn't get an adjustable bed unless required for medical purposes.

For twin beds, you usually have a topper over the top if joining them together; the quality of the topper will determine if you notice the gap.

    • Thanks for your reply. Why for medical only?

Speak from own experience, having a different support is far more important consider the sleeping patterns are different between myself and partner, firm & medium, side and back sleepers, the gap can be overcome by topping extra layer of underlay/topper, another advantage of having split singles is the convenience of moving the bed if required, particularly small apartment, 2-storey house where king bed and frame may got stuck at the stair/corridor.

Can the 2 halves be adjusted separately? If so, I don't see how you can have a king mattress across the whole bed (or even a mattress topper for that matter).

I have a king bed that is made up of 2 king single Tempur beds. Each side has a remote and both the top and bottom ends of each bed can be raised/lowered independently of the other. I just use one king sized T-shirt fabric fitted sheet that covers the two mattresses and a king sized comforter/quilt. The T-shirt sheet is ideal as it has a lot of "give" in it. The Tempur is really comfortable and worth every cent. Harvey Norman has some really good deals on these from time to time. Highly recommended and its great becuase you cannot feel the other person in the bed moving at all.

  • I’ve had a split king adjustable bed for six months and find the gap a bit of a pain comfort wise and have placed non slip matting under the mattresses but I’ve also noticed that the shortness of the springs which is common with adjustable beds affects the comfort factor for side sleepers like myself. A bit sorry I bought it now as there is no warranty for comfort. My husband is on the large side and he finds being allocated single bed dimensions a little small so some people may be better of going Californian king ie two king singles joined. I like the way the adjustable bases can be linked and controlled with one remote giving people the option of using a king mattress which might be nicer for some couples or people who find themselves single. Purchase from a store/online retailer that has a 3-4 month comfort guarantee. I will never get caught out again.
