Anyone Having Issues with PS4 Outputting DTS and HD Audio Formats from Physical Media?

I have a home theatre system (Denon receiver and speakers). I use the PS4 as my hub for streaming and physical media (blurays/dvds).

Last night I put in a bluray and for some reason the PS4 wasn't outputting DTS Master Audio. I changed all the multiple confusing settings within the PS4 and had no luck.
Dolby codecs worked fine (ie in the bluray menus) but as soon as the movie played with DTS-MA, the output defaulted to stereo.
Swapped out the PS4 for my PS3 and everything worked as expected. So its not my receiver as I used the exact same HDMI cable, input and settings.

Today I did some more troubleshooting with different blurays and DVDs and codecs.

PS4 will play Dolby Digital but not Dolby TrueHD - it reverts to normal Dolby Digital and my Receiver indicates its only Dolby.
It won't play DTS Master Audio - my receiver indicates its only receiving PCM 2.0 instead of the surround sound with the DTS-MA codec.
I tried a DVD with both Dolby and DTS formats (DVD doesn't have DTS-MA) and only the Dolby worked.

PS3 works with all of the above.

I've been using the PS4 for years as a bluray player and never had this issue. Was about a month ago I watched a bluray and it was fine.

Anyone else experiencing this?

I got my brother to check his PS4 and he said it was working as expected.

Note I checked Netflix but they use a Dolby codec so no issues there.

My thinking is that the new firmware 7.55 has screwed the DTS and HD Audio output from physical media for some reason.
I couldn't find anywhere to report a bug online to Sony/Playstation (only a number to call). I tagged them on Twitter and the DM they sent was to call and to expect waits to due queues etc. I don't really have the luxury of being on the phone for hours with a call centre when this appears to be a firmware issue.
Googling this problem got me nowhere.

TL:DR my PS4 suddenly stopped outputting DTS and HD Audio codecs from blurays/DVDs. PS3 has no issues. Thinking its firmware 7.55 issue. Wanting to know if anyone else is experiencing this.

  • On the PS4, what do you have the audio output format set to?

    • I normally have it to Bitstream (DTS). I've tried all 3 options including PCM but no matter which option I choose DTS-HD Master Audio does not get sent to my receiver other than in 2.0.
I've changed it from the main Audio Output Menu and also via the Options button when a bluray is playing.

Nothing has changed in my receiver and the fact the PS3 works on it with the same HDMI cable and input leads me to think its an issue with the PS4.
Note, I've used the PS4 for years as my bluray/dvd player and never had this issue. It only showed up now randomly.

  • Turn on HDCP

    • It is on. I just disabled and re-enabled just to be sure. No dice.
edit: with HDCP off in the PS4, it won't even let you start a bluray.

  • +1

Is your PS4 directly connected to the receiver, or to a TV going via ARC/eARC?

Your problem seems to match up with problems outputting high bandwidth audio - TrueHD, DTS-HD MA, and multichannel LPCM. The most common culprit is an ARC connection. It's also possibly some issue with the EDID the PS4 is getting from the receiver or what it's deciding to do with that information.

But just to be sure, have you checked the settings in the PS4 Blu-ray player software? There is an option to output LPCM or Bitstream. This is independent of the rest of the system settings for sound output that you've already mentioned you've checked.

That's all I can think of.

    • Connected direct to the receiver.
I have played with the Bluray software settings too. Tried combinations of the settings there and the main Audio Output Settings in the PS4 settings. Nothing changed.

Yeah its clearly something along those lines. I originally thought it was something in the receiver settings - blamed my 1 year old pressing button combos on the front panel - but the PS3 using the same connection works fine shrugs that's why I'm pointing to the new PS4 firmware 7.55. But I haven't seen any other complaints online of this, so maybe it is some random setting somewhere that's in conflict. I have gone through the various menus looking for something obvious - but I'm using a stored Quick Memory Option on my receiver which worked a few weeks ago.

Next thing now is I guess change HDMI cables just to rule that out.

I was hoping this was a widespread problem, but obviously not lol

      Thanks for the suggestions.
