Samsung LS03T 43" The Frame QLED 4K UHD TV [2020] (RRP $1395) $1185 + Delivery ($0 with C&C) @ JB Hi-Fi

180

We've been wanting one of these for our master bedroom and weren't sure about the ~$1400 price tag. I noticed it was $1185 on JB's website Friday night, so put an order in for click and collect. Recieved a text the next morning at ~9am to say it was ready.

TV looks pretty nice on the wall, the mount gear it comes with is slick and super easy to install.

Seems to be a part of JB's "Home Entertainment Bonanza" catalog.

From a tech radar review (https://www.techradar.com/au/reviews/samsung-the-frame-tv-20…) :

Buy it if…
You want a TV that blends in with the decor
You’re into classic artworks
You prefer form over function

Don't buy it if…
You want a cinematic TV for movie nights
You want a good value TV
You want incredible contrast ratios and true-to-life colors

If someone is looking into something like this I'd highly recommend going with the serif instead, it's far superior.

    • in what way? looking at the the website, id say it looks noticeably worse… but that's just me

      • Panel wise, performance wise, picture wise, I did a lot of reading on both a lot. As I needed a TV that's smaller screen and better image then uhd tvs. I wanted a Qled but under 55 inches.

      • The samsung frame is well behind nearly every other tv. Couldn't believe the ads in the main menu either. My old TV quote frankly looks better as a TV, but obviously the frame looks great with its mount and border, only looks good with certain pictures or art, most make it look cheesy.

    • Can't put it on the wall tho?

        Serif unfortunately not

        • +7

They're really just different products. If you want this, you don't want the serif, and vice versa.

  • i noticed in jb this week that some of the samsung q80 moddls were heavily reduced but now only a few are.

  • You know you need to pay a subscription to get access to the art work?

    • +2

Or just load your own for free

    • +1

You get 20 for free out of the box. Just download any 4k images you want, you can load em in, chose the frame size/type/colour etc.

looks pretty amazing during the day. at night its a bit odd as it's lit up

You know that's using/wasting your screen for no reason or any real function at all, plus the electricity. It sounds fun but in general it's useless. Unless you don't care at all about any of the points I've mentioned.

        • +4

Has a motion sensor to switch on or off if it doesn't detect anyone in the room. Pretty good sensor too, and starts back up in art mode in maybe 2-3 seconds.

Thanks for your input, enjoy your ugly TV

It’s only on when someone is in the room, and when it is on- it doesn’t look like a TV. It matches the other frames we have on the wall- so for us the premium is justified. We barely watch TV but didn’t want a black panel on our bedroom wall.

Each to their own. I personally find the serif tv fugly

        • You've missed the point of this "TV". The main purpose is to display photos and art in a lifelike manner. Tv ability is secondary. For me I could have paid a professional photographer about $500 to print and frame a photo of similar size or spend $1k and have the ability to swap photos at a whim. Thats how I sold it to my wife. I think it costs me between $30-40 per year to run from memory. Don't really have an issue paying for it.

You calling photos of my kids and holidays a waste?

          lol

    • Yeah its only $6/month i think. I just use mine for family photos anyway.

Paid $986 from Samsung EPP back in November with black Friday discount.

      • Dang that’s good! (The price of the set, not the subscription :D )

      • For what size? That sounds like a really good price.

        • +1

          43"

          • @0 0 0: I might wait for Black Friday then before pulling the trigger, cheers.

    • I thought you get more than 20?

We've had the older version of this for sometime now, there seem to be new art work popping up in the selection menu every now and then….

anyway we love this TV :)

Hope it doesn't get the notorious Samsung back lit LED failure resulting in purple splotches on the screen.

    • was in that the prostate cancer guide?

    • I've only ever experienced that on my Samsung Plasma's, didn't know it was an issue for the LED range as well.

      • I believe my dad's TV is LED, some of the back lights die and the others blast to compensate.

    • Samsung QLED TVS have a 10 year warranty.

    This or the 65" Q60 ?

    • +1

This is designed for an integrated in-wall (or in-something) experience, and you're paying a massive premium for that (the smarts are in a separate box). If you just want it to sit on a cabinet, or do a traditional wall mount, don't get this.

      • Yea picture wise this is budget. Appearance wise its premium.

        • exactly this - i wouldnt look at one of these as a primary tv

  • In the market for another 43" but having paid $556 (delivered to ACT) 12 months ago for a LG 43UM7600PTA 43" from good guys, I cannot get on board with the covid era prices they are going for now

    • +3

This is not a conventional TV. This has the smarts in a separate box to keep it thinner, fewer cables, and less hot, so it can be mounted in more interesting and neater/cleaner ways.

I was waiting for 65 inch one. The price for TV is the same in Good Guys(2% cashback), Harvey Norman… So I think it is a normal price now, will wait for Black Friday.
Please note you have to pay $179 extra for a bezel to look like a real frame.

  • I have the original 2017 65inch version and I love it, except for the adverts that appears in the menu system. It's BS that a $4000 TV has ads. I used a Pi-hole to block the adverts, and shortly after, I started having issues with the TV. I'm sure the issues were unrelated, but I'm yet to reenable the Pi-hole.

What happens when waking from sleep, the screen would only show black; the sound was on, the backlight was on, it would respond to remote commands, but no picture. Power cycling the screen or the One Connect box (separate power cords in the 2017 model), but not both, would fix it. Disconnecting the One Connect fiber cable and reconnecting it would also fix it. I didn't like doing that daily, so I contacted Samsung Support even though it was out of warranty (2.75 years old. 2 year listed warranty, but could likely claim longer with the Australian Consumer Guarantee). Support were great, although a little annoying (they actually called me back too often). They sent a new One Connect cable free of charge, which I didn't think would solve it, because the old was clearly wasn't damaged if it worked other than when coming out of sleep, and it hadn't been moved since it was installed. To my surprise, the new cable fixed it.

I just hope I don't need to buy another one for $300 in another 2.75 years time.

  • Don't buy it if…
You want a cinematic TV for movie nights

What's wrong with its cinematic capabilities? The frame seems quite unobtrusive, and there would be no distracting LEDs etc. Is it about its size? Btw, 55" is for $1695, so $300 off at JB at the moment, and the 65" one is $2290 ($405 off).

Black crushing is an issue, especially for daytime watching – while the low brightness and meagre 20W audio means this isn’t the best home theater system out there.

I'm guessing the quality bar is so high due to OLED, these "cheaper" panels can't compete. having said that - im sure it'd be perfectly fine for 90-95% of people.

      • Thank you! And now I also see it's QLED not OLED. Masters or marketing must've come up with that Q instead of O.
