it's been a blood test for quite a while now … not sure your tests are by a doctor ;)

Definitely sounds like they're pretty good with digits.

      • +2

You jest, but as a doctor, I should point out that the blood test is only part of it. A high PSA alone doesn't mean cancer. The physical examination is still important.

I look at core biopsies and including the physical exam findings on the request form helps me make my diagnosis :)

        • blood test is the far more important of the 2. Yeah, you can have low psa prostate cancer that a psa test will miss, but a digital exam misses far more than it catches. Prostate mri a good option if you're suspicious because of family history - it can detect lesions undetected by psa test/digital exam.

          • @redcreek200: DRE is not used for prostate cancer detection on its own. Specialists use it to get a guide to prostate size and smoothness. As the link below says, a high PSA - especially a fluctuating one - is also not a great guide on its own. If in doubt/with a family history ask for an MRI.

        • HI Morgan, Are you familiar with this new screening test? They are still looking for volunteers. https://niim.com.au/research-education/circulating-tumour-ce…

A friend had a prostate biopsy, got sepsis and nearly lost his life. Biopsy was negative for prostate cancer. There's a lesson in there somewhere.

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: Glad your friend is ok. Not much alternative to a biopsy for many of us. I had to get one when an mri indicated lesions. Lesions could've been benign or cancerous. You don't want your prostate removed or have radiation when it's not necessary. PC treatment is not fun.

            • @redcreek200: Agreed. My friend had a MRI which showed two lesions equivocal for cancer. The biopsy followed. Apparently, his fluctuating elevated PSA was due to BPH and prostatitis.

      • I’d be so disappointed if I cleaned my ass for a prostate exam only to get a blood test. Unless the doctor wasn’t cute anyway.

    • Also free advice from someone (w/o medical degree) who has gone through all of this and come out the other side!

There is doubt as to whether early detection increases survival rates, however I'm glad you pulled through.

    • There’s enough drs on ozbargain… mostly junior doctors and gps but still surprised me - I thought they’d be far too busy but I’ve been mistaken.

      • +2

No wonder my gps keeps giving me the wrong directions, it's connecting to OzBargain. I think I need to stop listening to Dr Dre while driving.

  • Is the cover what the Doctor sees when he's doing an exam?

    • More like what your (profanity) sees, your doctor’s deep blue eyes staring straight into it.

  • Every man should pull his finger out and give this a read.

    • It’s worth a good thumbing at least.

  • +2

If you're over 40, at least get your PSA tested every year. I only did when I got symptoms. Luckily caught it early and had it whipped out. We won't mention the side effects.

  • +2

    Thanks I’ll have a read.
I went to the docs about my sore back and nocturia, long story short got diagnosed with pca in April@44yo. No family history.
I’m taking some time to decide, removing the prostate is a big decision.
Meantime RSO 1ml daily has helped reduce my symptoms immensely and even dropped my psa slightly from 3.6 to 3.2 (this could just be normal fluctuations) as thing’s like cycling and ejaculation (hopefully not at the same time) can raise your psa level’s.

    • +1

Diagnosed by a specialist after an MRI and/or biopsies presumably? GPs are notorious for getting prostate diagnoses badly wrong.

      • +1

Yes of course, Biopsy and MRI. I just contacted the people doing the CTC trial so thanks to the person who posted that.

        • I think the CTC comment has been deleted - but I thought it was a screening test, not a diagnostic test.

          • +1

@fredblogs: I would say yes it is a screening test but it could also give you more information in conjunction with PSA/imaging.
I watched a talk with a doc that said Biopsies could also potentially cause metastatic spread in some people, that’s worrying :(

    • RSO 1ml daily?

  • +1

my doctor had both his hands on my shoulders during my exam, should I be concerned?
