2018 Vs 2020 MacBook Pro 13

Bit confused which route to go down. The 2018 Macbook Pro is an 8th gen 2.3GHz quad core, 4 thunderbolt 3 ports
The 2020 base is still 8th gen i5 1.4GHz quad core with 2 thunderbolt 3 ports. Both with the touch bar

Besides the butterfly keyboard, is the 2018 a better buy assuming they are around the same price?

Thanks for the help

The butterfly keyboard is the whole reason you wouldn't pick the 2018. It's absolutely shithouse, no matter what Apple's reality distortion field says. Remember your keyboard's the second most used part of a laptop, after the screen.

    • funnily enough, I have a 2016 12" macbook with the 1st gen butterfly keyboard and have actually found it pretty good to type on, but a bit more key travel would be nice (i think the later versions have this). its pretty clicky and firm, but that seems to fit the super tiny model

the reliability is a bigger concern though. i havent had much issue here either, but when crumbs or something have got under the keys you really feel it and have to hope that a can of compressed air will be enough to push them out. so far so good, but i dont know what happens when thats not enough

that said, definitely good they got away from the design, given the widespread problems. you cant have a keyboard with such low maintainability

    • Good point. Whats the point in a laptop where I can't type properly if it stuffs up lol

  • Always get the better keyboard. Apple had great MacBook keyboards for years (I liked the shallow travel chiclet keyboard too), then for a few years they dropped the ball. Tiny bits of dust would get under keys and not register presses. Okay maybe cookie crumbs, but still it was never a problem on older Apple keyboards. For me the new gold standard is the iPad Pro magic keyboard. It's just like the classic Apple keys on the old aluminum wired keyboards, but it feels like it's all made of sheet metal wrapped in space age rubber.

  • Thanks for the replies guys. So the little extra clock speed is irrelevant? Would the 2020 be good enough to run bootcamp? I've been randomly needing to run a windows program here and there for work and was considering getting a Matebook 13 instead. But I don't think I can be bothered having to worry about viruses, spyware etc. again.

    • Yes of course, I run bootcamp on my base 2020 13 MacBook pro

      • Awesome. Guess I'll be sticking to mac then
        Thanks!

Depends what you are going to use it for.

2020 has a better keyboard, also I would suggest to save more for the 10th gen intel chip, buying 8th gen in 2020 is no good

  • The days of looking at the clock speed as the sold indicator for performance is long gone. From a performance perspective, it is unlikely that there will be a huge difference. The 2018 Mac Pro has a i5-8259U whilst the 2019 one has a i5-8257U. Aside from the tuned down based clock speed and maybe TDP (Apple doesn't disclose this), they appear similar. Don't forget that both supports turbo boost at 3.8ghz and 3.9ghz respectively. I would say, do ANYTHING to avoid butterfly keyboard.

  • Thanks all for the advice everyone! Realised last weekend was the second time this month JB did a 10% off Apple Mac promotion… Makes me think there might be a refresh coming up in Oct for the Macbooks so might just wait until then. Anyone think this is likely?
If not I might at least see a deal come up during black friday sales or prime day?

    • Arm MacBook is coming, according to multiples sources,12 inch one (not the pro) will arrive first. If you run boot camp though, current Intel Macs (which will be phased out) will be the last ones you can buy to have this capability. As for Black Friday sale, Apple is likely to do a store credit giveaway like last year.
