Buying a Computer Monitor for a Gaming/Wokstation Build

Hi,

I'm looking to build a new gaming PC with probably a RTX 3080. For the build I'm looking to buy a monitor as well.

I have not been a fan of first-person shooter and not looking to do gaming competitively.

The games that I want to play are Assassin's Creed, Witcher 3, Red Dead Redemption 2, Flight Simulator, NFS, etc.

How important are things like high refresh rate and input lag for these games?

Has anyone used a high refresh rate TV for PC gaming?

  • It becomes a nice to have with high refresh monitors > 60fps if it's not FPS games.

It is noticeable, and if you're buying 3080, I'd definitely get a 144hz 1440p (also called QHD) monitor at least. You just missed out on a very highly rated 165hz dell monitor for $500 today.

I gamed on 60fps monitor (all the titles you mentioned in your post + FPS like overwatch, COD) for the longest time and bought a gaming monitor LG27850 6 months ago. I regret not getting it sooner. It is night and day in FPS games but noticeable in RPG type games - especially with the camera movements.

It is OPTIONAL but you're kinda wasting the 3080 if you're limited to 60fps gaming.

    • Thanks a lot for your advice 🙂

  • Go 1440p ultra wide at 120hz!

    • Second this.

I bought the X34P the month it dropped, it hasn't come down in price since and I'm happy for that, because it still is an awesome monitor.

However, with all monitors as you move from left to right, it gets cheaper.

Panel type: IPS > TN > VA
      Resolution: 4K > 1440 > 1080
      Response: 240hz > 144hz > 75hz > 60hz
      Size: 34" > 27" > 24" (just ask my missus)

If you want an IPS 4K panel at 240hz and 34" you are going to bendover backwards for one (mostly cause they don't exist lol), but say for example you find a real nice monitor, its 1440p, 144hz and 34" and its $500 - $750… I can guarantee you it will be an IPS. You want an IPS monitor with 1080p and 240hz and you want to spend maybe $400, you're not going to find bigger than 24" It's all a trade off.

      What I can suggest is:

1.VA panels are not desired in competitive play because of smearing, however if you have no desire, VA is probably perfect because they have the highest contrast ratios and look really really good, i'd argue any cinematic game looks better on VA.
      2. Resolution is whatever you make of it, and i'd tie it in with the screen size you want. If you want a big screen over 30" fork out for the 1440p, if you want less than 25" you'll be fine with 1080p but you could also look at 2560x1080 in the 27-29" range. The reason for this is you don't want to be able to see the pixels. I don't notice pixels on my 34" 1440p and pixel density is probably similar to that of a 2560x1080 in that size. Will save you some money
      3. If you aren't competitively gaming, 120-144hz is fine, but do not skimp on 75hz or less (because if you don't get a monitor with high refresh rate, you are wasting your 3080 and may as well buy a 3070).
      4. Up to you, having had an ultrawide at 34", I can't and will not go back to normal resolutions. It is amazing for immersive play.

      Goodluck!

      • This is very informative. Thanks for explaining all those to me 🙂.

Made an error here - change IPS to VA :)

    • Yeah I like those
