I was looking around the samsung site this morning and saw the new samsung s20 fe. I just wondered what thoughts everyone had on it, I think it's not to bad with the edu discount.
Thoughts on The New Samsung S20 FE?
Comments
As Belistic already pointed to the thread on the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE deals n such, but i'll summarise my own thoughts here for ya.
The positioning price wise is between Samsung's A series midrange and their flagships. I personally think for $800-900 (with the EDU and EDP discounts), is ok but there are some sacrifices, not "cheap" per se but we have Samsung's A Series (A51 and A31) to cover those bases. Some may consider it to be a S20 "Lite"
Things I do like:
- Big Winner here in Australia is that the 5G version finally gets the SoC Snapdragon 865 (YES FINALLY!!!) so I would invest that little bit extra on the 5G model, 4G uses Exynos.
- Heaps of new colourways
- the pricing seems ok
- big 4500 mAh battery
- to save costs the screen resolution was downgraded but they have a 120Hrtz refresh rate at 1080P if that's your thing. Not so much to battery life though.
- the screen size is nicely sized at 6.5" (S20=6.2", s20+=6.7", Ultra=6.9")
- triple cameras look to perform ok
- No fingers prints with the matte finish
- Waterproofing still there
- Stereo speakers
- SCREEN IS FLAT YASSSThings sacrificed:
- Glasstic finish may seem "cheap" and less durable
- Less RAM… 6GB is still sufficient for the average user
- Downgraded screen resolution (FHD+ VS QHD+… again thats fine for the average user
- Camera tech adjusted but overall not too bad
- 4G version (cheaper) unfortunately uses the SoC Samsung Exynos 990 (boooooooooo!)Overall, for the price with discounts I think it is not too bad.
Has no headphone jack…. skip.
Apparently Samsung might put one next year… that would be something to look forward to
I'm surprised they released this rather than something like an iPhone SE2/Pixel 4a equivalent. I know they have lower spec models, but they don't have the same cachet as those two models. Then again, Samsung sell way more lower priced phones that Apple or Google (especially overseas in developing countries), so maybe they don't feel the need as they already have that market need met.
I think Samsung is hitting every single price point to see what sticks, with the EDU or the EDP discounts I think the S20 FE is priced competitively.
The Pixel 4A ($599) is probably more comparable in price to the Samsung A51 ($549) verses to the base 64gb iPhone SE2 which is higher in price at $749 RRP.
if the pixel 5 is $999, going to make things real interesting.
