I am looking for a laptop for my 8 year old son and want to use the JB HI Fi $1200 instore credit.

For an 8-year-old, I would say durability is more important than specs. Go in store (as you're not in VIC) and get a feel for the build quality of various models. I believe some have splash resistant keyboards as well.
