How to Share Non-iTunes Purchased Music across Apple Devices

Hi all,

I'm planning on retiring my MacBook and making the leap to an iPad Pro.

Only issue is, I have my music collection on my MacBook (non-iTunes purchased) which I sync across to my iPhone.

Assuming the MacBook is out of the picture, how do people access their non-iTunes purchased music across their apple devices if they don't have a MacBook to sync it with?

Hope that makes sense, really hoping for some creative solutions here!

Thanks

You can use iTunes on non-Macs too.

If you want a way to put any file on your iPhone and be able to view it or play it, you can use GoodReader. Costs a few $. You can do this wirelessly (using a network folder on your computer or Web address) or by cord. And you can download youtube videos to your phone also.

    • Thanks for the input!

In my scenario I want to detatch completely from Windows and Mac, so I'm hoping there's a solution for those going iPadOS solo.

      • If you use GoodReader you can set up cloud storage and redownload to your phone via URL. No PC or Mac needed.

  • I use Tiny Player to play music on my iPhone. Basically you just upload music to your phone via laptop via a URL. Not much in terms of cover art or anything though

Just pay for iTunes Match and your music will be stored in iCloud if it can’t match your files to a track in the store. https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT204146

    • This sounds like a great option, is it available in Australia?

For some reason I can't find a signup link

      • You need to do it on the MacBook where all your music is stored, in the iTunes app. Once all your music is uploaded you can delete it from the MacBook and it will all sync to the iPad Pro if you log in on the same iTunes account.

      • iTunes Match is included in the paid Apple Music btw, provided you keep your subscription going indefinitely. Any songs that aren't matched will be uploaded, and you can play them back in the Music app on your iPad, also you can play back music in any browser now too.

Also you have other options, you could store all those songs in the cloud and play them back on an iPad app that plays them and supports reading from cloud.

        • Thanks, all makes sense now.

I was hoping in an ideal world for the iPad to let you download music direct to the Files app and it import into iTunes in the same way it does on the Mac.

Classic Apple wrangling you into their world :)

          • @LemonShapedRock: Well you'll only need to add them all to iTunes on a PC/Mac once. After that you can manage it all in the Music app. But you need to either pay the yearly cost for iTunes Match, or pay for Apple Music. Or you can just add the files to the cloud, OneDrive or the iCloud folder for Mac/PC, use a 3rd party app on your iPad to play the music.

  • BTW I would order the new iPad Air4 instead of the Pro - cheaper with similar ability, but you will need to wait till Oct for delivery.
