I have not upgraded my computer for awhile, current have a GTX970.

I have made up my mind to get the 3080 and would like your opinion on my build?

    For what use?

      gaming :)

If it's for gaming I'd switch to Intel but it's not a huge weak point.

Unless you have a reason for 32GB RAM I'd also get 16GB and faster RAM instead.

    • I've been advised that the Ryzen outperforms Intel at 1440p which is why I chose the Ryzen.
Thanks for the RAM suggestion, never thought of that! I always think more RAM = faster haha

You can't just pick a brand like that (well, you can, but it won't guarantee you the best bang for buck).

Check gaming benchmarks for the 2 CPUs of similar price (including the motherboard you'd need).

e.g.: these games show the cheaper 10700k beats the 3900x you have:

Though picking AMD means you can upgrade to the Ryzen 4000 series, out in a few weeks, if that turns out faster than intel (as we all hope).

    • I've updated the part picker list, what do you think about the RAM now? or do you have a particular suggestion?

  • Did you see the bottom of that page? There are answers there you may have missed. Copied below:

    "Compatibility Notes

Note:NZXT H510 ATX Mid Tower Case has a front panel USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type C port, but the Asus TUF GAMING X570-PLUS (WI-FI) ATX AM4 Motherboard does not have sufficient USB 3.2 Gen 2 or Gen 1 headers. The case USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type C port will not be usable.

Note:The Patriot Viper Steel 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-4400 CL19 Memory operating voltage of 1.45 V exceeds the AMD Zen 2 CPU recommended maximum of 1.35 V+7% (1.444 V). This memory module may run at a reduced clock rate to meet the 1.35 V voltage recommendation, or may require running at a voltage greater than the AMD recommended maximum. "

and one more about the clearance issues

You need clearance for your board to be able to use USB3 so maybe look at other cases?
And the RAM clockspeed is presumably why you want faster memory. Go to the ASUS website and find the fastest recommended for that board: https://www.asus.com/au/Motherboards/TUF-GAMING-X570-PLUS-WI…

  • Thank you, this helped a lot
edit: Adjusted build according to your suggestions. thanks!

    • I like the new case choice … there is only room for two 3.5 inch HDDs … that said I don't need a 3rd. My boot drive is SSD.

I might buy that case myself - some features I like for that price point. Go Newegg! I can't bring myself to commit yet might have to look around a bit more.

I would solicit more opinions elsewhere though … this isn't a tech forum it's a bahhhgain forum. No offence to any wizards present.

      • I didn't opt to buy from newegg as the shipping cost is crazy!

  • where are you going to find stock for the 3080

    • preordered from PLE

  • Just going through your list:

CPU- If you dont need it immediately, try to wait until Oct 8 for next gen ryzen announcement.
Cooler- Not worth getting the 212 over the AMD Wraith Prism that is included. The difference is small and definitely not worth $60. (higher AMD cpus actually provides you with an adequate stock cooler as opposed to the garbage Intel gives).
Mobo - Any particular reason you want x570? Personally would look for a slightly better feature set B550 board. Something like the MSI MPG B550 Gaming Edge Wifi or ASUS ROG Strix B550-F Gaming Wifi.

Ram: Decision on RGB and 16gb vs 32gb. Then look for stuff on special. Don't get too hung up on speeds 3200mhz CL14 is similar to 3600mhz CL16. Even 3200mhz CL16 isn't going to be a bad option. You'll probably never really notice the real world differences for the most part anyways.

Storage: Mostly whatever is on sale with your preferred size- also consider shucking external 3.5 drives if they're on sale.

Case: If you like the look of the NZXT H510, I'd say feel free to use that. The compatibility issues with front headers are all solved if you move to a similarly priced B550 board.

    • Thank you for the detailed feedback, I've already purchased everything so it's too late :*(
