Advice on where to get the best boxes (or similar) for moving apartment/ possible transport

Hi. Will be moving from a 2 bed apartment to another over the next couple weeks.
It's only 100km up the highway. I can probably do all of it in my my van (in many trips, though might be better off hiring a small truck).
I'm mainly chasing advice on where / what is best to purchase to pack the smaller, though fragile items…
I'm talking kitchen appliances, records etc…
I figure the clothes can just travel in those 2 dollar zip up bags from cheapo stores..
though the more fragile stuff, I'm probably wanting boxes for.
I waffled on to much, I suppose I'm asking who sells decent moving boxes the cheapest?
any advice appreciated (even regarding hire of a small truck)

Not sure about buying, I've never purchased boxes for moving. I go to woolworths at the end of the day and ask for any unused boxes. Bunnings also have boxes usually for free just after checkout for anyone to take

U can also check gumtree. I've had friends advertise decent quality (used) boxes for sale for decent price

    • Hey, thanks.
I thought the supermarket ones might be too small/ flimsy, but I suppose it's worth a look. I have a bunnings around the corner that I'll check this afternoon too.
I just remember some old friends I helped move, and they had 'moving boxes', they were really heavy duty (felt twice as thick as your regular cardboard, but probably expensive and wasteful).
Checking Gumtree is a great idea also, thanks.

      • Toy stores generally have big boxes. Tell them you need some and asked them to put aside for you. Bunnings do not give away boxes for no purchase. Alternatively you can purchase those from National storage or Storage Kings with some of them do buy back

    Try Facebook marketplace.

I got rid of Facebook 8 years ago, it seems like I need to get it back, just for marketplace… I keep hearing about the bargains on there! thanks

I am in the same boat, but need to reactivate periodically if I need to sell something.

  • Check your local grocers as they also get vegetables delivered in the white foam boxes

  • gumtree.. saw someone yesterday giving away 25 huge boxes. Was tempted to get them and try and make a cardboard halloween costume, but out of my 5k

  • If you are ready to pay, here is the cheap and good option - PackingBoxes

  • I purchased several 70ltr tubs from the cheap shop. good for storage after the move too.

Or your local computer shop will have TONS of boxes.

  • I bought mine from Bunnings when I moved. It wasn't that cheap, but it was the easiest. I unpacked and reused them for each trip.
The reason I didn't go to the supermarkets was because the boxes were all different sizes and I didn't feel like playing tetris on every load.

Thats half the fun of moving!

      • Any other day, I'd probably agree with you. But things are a bit different having open-heart surgery! lol

  • Grocers or fresh produce markets have sturdy cardboard boxes that are double layered or one flipped and slotted into the other for free - they have to be sturdy to hold 5-10kg of oranges, apples, etc.

  • Not the cheapest option (so am sure it will not be popular) but I have used a service like this the last time I moved (many years ago) - https://www.koalabox.com.au/

They drop off the required number of plastic crates, I packed it all up, moving company moves it and then they come pick up the plastic crates a few weeks later once I have unpacked. Easy stack, easy to move (they provide a trolley), and easy on the other side without going through piles of boxes.

But then how can you keep stuff in boxes until you move next time, wonder why the hell you've kept them anyway, then move them to your next place and repeat? Or is that just me…

      • Exactly!

This made me also unpack and sort out all of the boxes, as we all know near the end of packing it becomes a dump everything in the box exercise. Made moving and settling in a much more pleasant experience.

Oh, man that is familiar. My problem is I bought all this shit for a reason in the first place so I can’t just ditch it. The fact that I can’t remember why I bought it is another issue.

PM me if you’re in Bne. I’ve got quite a few moving/packing boxes I’m happy to part with.
