Thanks to annarchon for sharing that the drive is cheaper at CentreCom at $78. If you add a low price item such as thermal paste or a short Cat6 cable ($2.50), you'll be able to get it over the $79 free metro shipping threshold. However, if you are outside the free shipping area, then the Amazon AU deal is still pretty good.

This is from Amazon AU locally, so should be delivered faster than the Amazon UK listing recently (and slightly cheaper too). Noted that it isn't that much different from current local market prices of other retailers, but it's significant enough for this category and price point, especially after one considers shipping cost.

Pretty good price for a reliable SATA SSD with DRAM, although if you aren't needing one urgently, there's a good chance you'll see the fantastic price of $79 (delivered) for MX500 500GB in the near future. There aren't much practical difference for general users between different brands of reliable mainstream SSDs, so go for whatever is the cheapest.

Personally I see reliable SSDs are what Anandtech described as follows (https://www.anandtech.com/show/9799/best-ssds):

We consider mainstream SATA SSDs to be those that use TLC NAND and have DRAM buffers. These offer performance and reliability that's a step above budget models with DRAMless controllers or QLC NAND (or both).

Pretty much they are the Samsung EVOs, WD Blue 3D/Sandisk Ultra 3D, and MX500 (SK Hynix isn't that common here yet?).

    Kingston A2000 500gb m.2 nvme for <$6 more here

would have expected these to be even cheaper

Yup that's a pretty good price for an entry level NVMe drive for systems that can take it.

Sadly some systems don't have a M.2 NVMe port =( Although I'm guessing most of them would be laptops, and low to mid range motherboards pre-2015?

Or for less than $3 more here

    • Extra $8.63 shipping though (tested for NSW) =S

I think the margin for smaller capacity SSDs (<960GB) are just too low for most retailers to offer free shipping on its own.

      • isnt centrecom free shipping over $70? or is it $80. cant remember

FS over $79, so you could probably find something cheap to throw in and get it over!

@jp1011: Tested with a $2.50 30cm Cat6 cable bringing cart to $80.50 enabled free shipping to metro NSW. Will note in post.

  • weighing in on EVO 860 vs MX500 to be available around $70 in a few weeks for a HDD upgrade. hope someone drops a deal here for me :) cheers!!

I ordered a gpu from them and I paid $13 for shipping 2 weeks ago and expected day of arrival was thursday last week and tuesday tomorrow, hasn't come yet…

  • A little off topic but these WD Blue 3D NAND SATA SSDs can be used to upgrade the WD wifi Pro HDD drives to SSD. A direct replacement. Considering the purchase cost difference in the HDD/SSD models, this makes for a cheap upgrade. Note, only works with WD blue.

    • Thanks for the info =)
