Economical Colour Printer for Home Use (School Kid)

I have a mono multifunction laser printer for over 10 years now. It works perfectly but the little one seems to want colour prints for school work (highschool next year).

I'm thinking of getting a colour laser printer. Something that could scan would be a bonus.

What type of printer do you have? Any recommendations?

We have used 2 or 3 toners over 10+ years. I'm guessing 300 to 500 pages per year.

  • You cant beat an epson ecotank. Their entry level is now $299. https://www.epson.com.au/products/ecotank/ET-1110.asp

The canon g3600 is good but has a high failure rate.

Their initial cost is expensive, but its like buying a Tesla motor vehicle.

Economical and colour printer rarely go together and will always be more costly than a BW laser printer

I'm a fan of the Brother printers at the moment, so go them in a color laser.

    Maybe something like this?

100% agree. I'm not expecting it to be cheaper than a BW printer. Happy to fork out some money upfront as long as it doesn't keep costing me heaps when it comes time to replace the toners.

Thanks for the link to the printer. I will check the costs of the toners.

  • Something else to consider is HP Instant Ink - a printing subscription service. You pay for the number of pages printed.

  • +3

For high school reports, the majority of the time it would still be in black & white. I have 2 high school kids and my setup is just a mono laser & Officeworks for those odd colour pages every now and then.

  • I used a Samsung Colour Laser printer for some 10 years and it never gave me trouble.

But after 10 years, toner cartridges were getting hard to find and therefore getting more expensive. Still, on the performance and cost/page, I'd go back to it in a heartbeat.

After those years and when I needed a black cartridge, it was against my better judgment that I somehow let a salesman talk me into a Canon Maxify MB5460 (inkjet). That was one of the biggest tech mistakes I've ever made.
