VIC Stage 4 - Are We Allowed to Use The Basketball Rings at The Local Park in Metro Melbourne?

The DHHS website advises “Outdoor sport facilities are closed. Open public spaces like an oval can be used to exercise”

Would a basketball ring at my local park be considered ‘open’?

All I want to do is take my basketball to my local ring as a form relaxation. I’ve seen people playing on their own but not sure if this is against the rules or not.

    Is basketball a sport?

    • There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely games.

Yeah it's fine, lots of people at the courts near me next door to police station. Even had beers delivered to the courts by a local pub but don't tell anyone.

Is classed as a sport facilities, so closed.

Open spaces like Ovals as in running laps, stretching etc.

Sports that have close contact like basketball, are a no no.

They're talking about outdoor rings at parks and the like which are 100% fine, see my post above.

      • I'm with @JimmyF on this one. If the OP is by themselves then i feel the police's discretion will come into play and they should tolerate it. However if the OP is with other people then it's off limits as it would be classed as a contact sport.

Cool, that's your right. You'd be wrong though. Let me say it again: courts next to police station packed every day, cops coming past, having chats with us. Zero issues.

Agreed if playing by themselves that is a 'gray' area, but if playing with other people then that is a no no.

            @JimmyF: Yep
Sharing 1 basketball between multiple people is just nonsensical, that's exactly how COVID spreads

      • They're talking about outdoor rings at parks

Doesn't matter, just like playgrounds that are OUTDOORS are closed to kids, so are basketball rings, that street 'gym' equipment etc.

If you're in close contact with other people, touching surfaces that can't be cleaned between use, then its off limits.

Not understanding the downvotes considering everyone's doing it in my suburb RIGHT NEXT TO POLICE and are having no issues. Came in trying to help and got pounced on. I get you're all having a hard time but don't take it out on me for trying to help by relaying my personal experience. I'll ask the cops what they think about this thread and get back to you all if you'd like.

  • If theres no tape and the rings are there, yolo

  • As dan would say, it’s common sense. Everything is common sense.

    • Dan says the darnest things.

Ironic coming out of someone who doesn't have any.

  • So it sounds like the majority are saying 'No' to this. So my next question is should I be doing the right thing and call the cops to advise there are people breaching restrictions?

      Why must the options be
      1. I can do the thing I want to do.
      2. I go tell on people doing the thing I want to do.

      • Am I doing the right thing is a better way to word it

Maybe they have been stuck at home with a crying newborn all night and they need to unwind.

Instead of shooting a few hoops, they're asked to go home and pay a $1.6k fine. Angry dad and hungry kid.

Perhaps option 3. - let it be.

It’s up to you, today I saw a dad let his kids play on the play ground. I don’t care, I don’t think it’s wrong, I know it’s against the law, but I wouldn’t dob someone in fo something so minor like that. Though Dan Andrews continues to back police in enforcing the laws.

So ask yourself, do you agree, if so, you should. If not, don’t.

It’s a bit like the time I saw someone steal, I called the cops. I believe stealing is wrong and is against the law.

I’ve seen people jay walk, it’s against the law, but I think it’s fine, no cars etc, it’s safe.
