How Long Should Alkaline AA Batteries Last in a RC Car?

Got a pack of batteries from deal here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/543111. Got a nice looking remote controlled car from target https://www.target.com.au/p/sharper-image-rc-led-lightning-thrasher/63350531.
Realized that these batteries last a max of 5 mins of use in the car. Tried with a different set of alkaline batteries and same issue, so its definitely not the batteries. The car does not work with rechargeable batteries (aka laddas) and hence could not check the performance.
Is this how long alkaline batteries are supposed to last in RC cars? Anyone have any experience with this before?

  • What happened when you used LADDAs?

    • the car does not start (maybe because its 1.5v vs 1.2v)

If it doesn't like rechargeable, this is probably why it only gets 5 mins out of regular batteries. Soon as the voltage drops a little, it switches off.

        • damn, at this rate, I will end up with so many dead alkalines

          • @iamnowhere24: It depends on how good you are at tinkering and modding and how much you want to spend.

You could get two 14500 Lithium Ion batteries that have a 3.7v each and much higher capacity than NiMh, but you would need to slightly rewrite the RC car and you would need a proper charger for the 14500 batteries…

Edit: you may also want to look into 1.5v LiIon batteries. Just been doing some research and found that a few companies have come out with 1.5v 3200mAh AA sized batteries. Just google Tenavolt, Deleepow or Kentli. They might be a good alternative to the 1.2v NiMh batteries.

Hobbyking also have NiZn batteries that would work and are pretty cheap, but again, you would need an appropriate charger for them. Or these at slightly less capacity but able to be charged via micro USB.

  • What RC car is it? Some of those electric motors can draw a lot of battery power. Most higher end RC cars will use hi capacity battery packs and even then runtime is still modest.

    • Yep, I remember back in the day my RC would last 5-10mins or so and I'd have to spend at least half an hour charging again

    • the link to the car is in the OP, its from Target

Get something that isn't complete rubbish around the $100-150 from Turnigy/HobbyKing etc. Get a rtr car, will have a lipo battery.
