Exetel NBN50 or Tangerine NBN50 Guys!

Hi folks,

Tangerine Telecom has been very popular lately with better review on productreview.com.au compared to Exetel NBN50.

I just wonder whether it's worth a change as I am moving to a new place and currently with Exetel for 1 years and think of changing to Tangerine.

    belong NBN….

    • belong to who?

    • start with a proper provider like ABB. once you establish that your line has no issues, move to Belong. I would never sign up with Belong on FTTN.

I think Tangerine are ok for a lower tier provider. My issue with them is they tend to be a bit hit and miss. Some people report zero issues and others might have some speed issues during peak..

If you don't really mind, just run with price. I would suggest not getting into a contract so its fairly painless just to move to a new ISP should you want to.

I'm personally with Future Broadband which has data banking so you can save by filling up your bank and then moving to a lower data plan and save as you use up the data. They do have a sign up fee however. Always fast business network, static IP included, referral scheme and Au based support. Pay in advance discount.

I think someone else mentioned Belong. They have a well priced starter plan. Support though..not so sure.

      This!

I have been with them for several months and have patchy speeds, however they have given me 100 Mbps speeds for the price of 50 (when it decides to reach it) hence I am staying onboard for now.
Having said this, i have rarely experienced drop outs. Customer support seems reasonable as I don't have to wait for too long.

      Cheers

    with better review on productreview.com.au

You are using productreview as a basis for choosing your ISP ????

    • do we have ISPreview website?

      • check whistle out, choice, or canstar or reviews.

  • I moved away from Exetel50 to ABB. Found Exetel really suffered at peak times but no such issue on ABB.

I moved away from Exetel50 to ABB.

and how much did ABB increase your price by recently?

Nothing - NBN50 plans aren't affected? I got my first month free, support is fantastic and service is great so I'm happy.

Support is good, prices not so much though…

@jv: Not disagreeing, but life is too short for bad internet and bad wine.

              @knasty: true…

some people can't afford good internet and good wine, so they settle for OK internet and OK wine…

  • i'm with exetel. seems good enough for basic streaming and browsing… i'm on an NBN25 mbps plan… speed test results say download is 21.8 and upload is 3.9mbps.

bit pricey for what it is though $59/month for the first 6 months, increasing to $69 per month thereafter

    • $69 seems to be the going rate for unlimited. You can get some cheaper plans with a data limit.

      tangerine is $10 cheaper.

  • Tangerine PAYS users to post on productreview.com.au - that's why they have so many good reviews. They get people in with (initially) cheap deals, which are not so crash hot once the shine wears off and the price goes up $10 or whatever. Also the speeds seemed generally a bit patchy. I left when I wanted to go up to a higher speed (50 Mbps) plan. The price just wasn't right. I'm now paying at least $15 less. I do have to say the onboarding with Tangerine was flawless and very quick, and communications from them were excellent. They do most things quite well and I like their branding and their general attitude.

    • Which one are you with now?

      • It's a long story, but Spintel (I got a special deal, not an Ozbargain kind of deal, but a good deal nonetheless).

Was with Exetel for many, many years and loved it…. moved back to QLD and found their Regional vs Metro price difference to be a killer. It's a damn shame.

I just find Tangerine referral is a mess, referer never get bonus until being chase up.

    • thanks for pointing this out as I am quite impressed with the rating to be honest

    • better than spintel and optus for service.

  • tl;dr : Tangerine better option than Exetel (at least for me)

I chose Tangerine because I wanted static IP and reverse DNS record. Exetel (and most other ISPs) could not provide those features at reasonable prices. With Tangerine, it's all included in the normal residential plan price.

I'm on HFC 100/40 plan (would go for faster uplink speed if it was available). Upon initial connection I was getting 92/37 speeds at all times. After a few weeks my peak speeds dropped to anywhere between 2/30 and 18/35. It took Tangerine and NBN about 2 weeks to sort that out and return the speeds to 90/37. That was fine for about a year, then my peak speeds dropped down to around 10/37 while off-peak remained at 90/37. This time it took Tangerine about 2-3 days to resolve the issue and since then my speeds have remained at 92/37 any time of day for the last 3-4 months.

I've also had an issue with Tangerine billing. My plan had the initial 6 month $10 discount, but because I met certain criteria I was eligible for that price on an ongoing basis. Unfortunately their automated system did not transition my plan to that rate and I was charged the normal rate for a few months. When I noticed, I gave them a call and they immediately checked, acknowledged the issue, apologised and adjusted the billing to deduct the overpayments from the next invoice and ensured that I was charged the correct rate going forwards. They thanked me for bringing the issue to their attention and mentioned they will get their backend people to investigate the cause of the issue.

So, from my perspective, Tangerine are capable of delivering good speeds, have some extra features (that may not be relevant to most customers, but are of great value to me) and their customer service has resolved all my issues without showing any signs of incompetence or being obstructive.

I've been a (long term) customer of Exetel in the past as well. Exetel used to have a good feature set, adequate support and used to represent good value for money. Then the founder passed away and the decline started. Eventually I left Exetel because the value proposition disappeared, features were taken away and customer service turned into a disaster zone. I have periodically looked at the Exetel offerings to see if they are competitive, but I have not seen any Exetel NBN plans that would tempt me.

  • I have been happy with Tangerine since 06/2020. I’m on the 50 tier and get about 45/15 pretty consistently. I’m in Rooty Hill NSW. I think there have been two network issues in the last few months that caused outage for a few hours.
