Help picking floorstanding speakers

Hey guys so I'm after a pair of floorstanding speakers to be used mostly for music and also movie/tv. So far this is what I've come down with but would like another opinion. The Australian markets kinda sucks and I'm still learning. Also not sure if I should go for a more powerful amplifier but I was thinking the Yamaha as301

As for a receiver I was thinking this

And for speakers this is what I've narrowed down to but still open for suggestions:

I suggest you locate your nearest quality hi fi store.
If you're in Sydney, there's a few around. Try Len Wallis Audio at Lane Cove. They have a few listening rooms.
Another store at Castle Hill, can't remember the name.

Personally, I bought a pair of Richter floorstanders about 20 years ago & they'll give several of todays speakers a solid run for their money. Richter are Aussie made too.

I'm not sure if you are dead keen on buying brand new, but if you want to save some money I recommend keeping a look out on FB Marketplace or Gumtree for some second hand ones. There are some seriously good and cheap speakers on there, constantly new ones coming up since people seem to prefer the tidiness of Soundbars now as opposed to a big system.

Sometimes people just don't know what their speakers are worth, don't know what they actually have etc. My favourites are when someone just calls it 'Speakers' with no description and sells the whole 5.1 plus receiver for $50-$100. Usually need to be pretty quick though, sometimes its about logging in just at the right time.

    • Yeh mate i have been looking all the time but have struggled to find anything which has been annoying. I would rather be used if I can but haven't had any luck over the last 2 months so have given up hope I think.

I wouldn't buy any speakers without auditioning them first. What sounds great to me might sound like rubbish to you.

  • Second hand.

At that budget you can pick up quality floor standers that would last you decades.

I highly, highly recommend any of the Krix line. Made in Adelaide. Fantastic speakers.

  • If you have the dosh, consider getting a Sonos system with the new Arc, sonos ones and sub for surround sound setup

  • If you want to watch movies/TV then I would recommend and AV receiver rather than a stereo amp.
Depending on your TV (if it is 4K HDR10 etc), then you would need a decent late model receiver (if you want to input 4K content through your receiver)

Speakers I would recommend (Second hand like above suggestions)
    - Krix
    - Polk Rti series
    - Klipsch RF series
    - Monitor audio
    - KEF
    - Q acoustics

    • Thanks mate! Would mostly be listening to records via turntable so more after a 2.1 but may as well hook tv up too as it's all on the same sorta area/unit. Two birds one stone sorta thing

      • If you are after 2.1 then an AV receiver is the way to go.

        • Later AV receivers has a subwoofer RCA out that connects to your sub.
        • Wired speakers out via receiver
        • You have the best of both worlds, connect the turntable to the RCA in to the AV receiver.

        Switch accordingly on the receiver.

        • HDMI for movies (DVD/BD if you have a bluray player) e.g 5.1
        • RCA audio in "Phono" (2.1)
        • TV for sound out from TV to receiver.

No need to buy a separate amp and waste your money.
The AV receiver will still sound great for 2 channel audio.

        Cheers

  • If you want movies you ideally want surround sound. Centre channel at the very least, for clear dialogue.

I feel like you need to work out your priorities here. $1000+ floorstanding stereo speakers will be great for music, but suck for movies.

Thanks for commenting mate! Should of made myself clearer but I'm basically after speakers to listen to records via TT. Just have tv near by so may as well use them for that too. But priority is 100% music

Hi, I suggest that you visit one of the hifi shops and bring with you some CDs or music you would listen to, the size of your room and your budget. In Sydney, you can visit Len Wallis Audio at Lane Cove or Eastwood Hifi at Dural, or other stores. They will be able to help you answer most of your questions. Len Wallis sometimes sells 2nd items too.

    • Eastwood hifi in dural are excellent I find

      • Yes, they are very good. There price is very competitive too. I find that they don't need to up sale you.

  • Try some Wharfedale speakers
