Seagate 2TB External Hard Drive $99

100

Page 13 of latest Australia Post catalogue (top right corner). Considering current pricing of hard drives, $99 for an external 2TB name brand hard drive is pretty good.

Funnily enough on same page they have a 1TB Seagate "Portable" drive for $109. The 2TB is the "Desktop" version.

Doesnt say, but safe to assume it's USB 2.0 for the price. Anyone seen packaging in store?

EDITED/UPDATED: Dick Smith now have same drive for $99 delivered!

For this price, most likely USB 2.0 but can anyone confirm?

    • hahaha… beat me by 7 seconds to my edit :).

  • Here's specs on the USB 2.0 version: http://www.seagate.com/docs/pdf/datasheet/disc/ds_ext_deskto…

And just in case, here's the USB 3.0 version: http://www.seagate.com/www-content/product-content/expansion…

Bargain of the century if it's the later though ;).

Edited: Assuming the Auspost one is the USB 2.0, looks like Dick Smith has the same deal http://dicksmith.com.au/product/XH9888/seagate-expansion-2tb…

  • Great deal considering 2TB internals are going for ~$150 right now.
Any idea what the inside drive is and if it'll work as an internal disk?

    • the inside would be a seagate, but what do you mean by "work as an internal disk"?

other than not being able to treat it as a conventional boot drive, and having lower transfer speeds (i wouldnt use it as the gaming drive), it would be perfectly fine for normal use.

i plan to use it as part of my media server at home. i have other external usb drives plugged in to that and they work fine.

      • He means cracking the case open and using it as an internal sata drive for a system, not using it as an external usb 2.0

        • ahhh….. good idea!

        • a lot of people are doing this, but it screws with warranty :<

  • Not a great bargain if its a USB 2.0. There have been a few deals lately for around $80 for 2tb externals.

Except with the hard drive shortage and price increase, cracking it open and getting the 2tb for internal would save a lot of money

I bought a 2Tb external HDD USB 2.0 from DSE for $99 about a month ago. I'm not sure how this is much of a deal if its only USB 2.0. Seems to be the market price for these drives now.

a month ago prices of hard drives were half what they are now.

no i disagree, although internals have defintely gone up, externals havnt really (especially with larger compnaies that have big quantaties of stock avaliable). jb hifi still has a $98 2TB that comes with a small usb stick that backs up when u plug it in. much better deak

        http://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers/storage/hitachi/life-stud…

        • thanks for link mate!

up until now everyone has been saying this is not a great deal, but not offering alternatives!

as much as I think $100 for an external 2TB seagate drive is a good deal, I must admit that hitachi one you've linked to looks even better- but it looks god awful, and reviews arent too kind regarding transfer speeds.

mind you, JB's also trying to flog the drive I posted for double the price! http://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers/storage/seagate/expansion…

yeah externals still seem cheaper at the moment, but if they are talking about 12 months until stocks are back to normal, even externals are going to go up in price soon.

        • imaximax1 - what drive is inside the hitachi 2tb - 7k2000 or 7k3000?

  • -3

officeworks has had this at $99 for yonks. Dick smith also has it for $99

    • As UFO has pointed out, current prices are expensive. Some even double the price of what they were a month or so ago. Its because there is a global shortage of HDDs. Thailand makes 40% of the worlds drives, and with the recent floods prices have skyrocketed :(

Once these stocks go, it might be a while before they can restock at reasonable prices

e.g. of a news article about it http://www.thinq.co.uk/2011/11/3/hdd-shortage-continue/ or http://www.mercurynews.com/business/ci_19266849

      • Thinking of getting this even tough I dont need any more storage for 6 months at least. Heard stories that prices wont be back to where they were before for at least 1 year.

        • "A worldwide hard disk shortage caused by recent severe flooding In Thailand is set to continue for at least six months."

The first story ScaryZombie linked to agrees with you.

not too sure why I got negged. I didn't neg the deal. All I did was point out that the price is nothing new as 2 major retailers still have it at that price. Until they put up the price of this drive like with the other hard drives (WD 2tb went from $98 on tue to $109 on wed at OW), this deal while value is nothing special.

please note, if your planning on turning this into an internal hard drive..
some of the ports are fused together, which stops people from doing this..
so make sure you research before you buy =)

    • Yep…. most of the internals now come crippled so you cant crack them open (or if you do - you cant use them as an internal disk). I understand there is a video about cracking open the Seagate 2TB USB 2.0 on the internet which says it is a SATA drive, however I believe that this is an older model and the present model available in Australia has the cripple(hard)ware built in.

If anyone buys this and can confirm either way it would be appreciated.

Saw Seagata 2Tb at bigw eastgarden for $98.
Goodguys alexandria also have Samsung story 2 tb USB2 for $99

  • cheers. I got 2 yesterday

  • Can anybody confirm if we can crack this badboy open for internal use? In desperate need of a new boot drive :P

    • I am not confirming anything, but I see no issues. It will be just a standard SATA drive inside the case.

      • True, but there have been some cases where the I/O connector has been soldered on to prevent people from using it elsewhere.

        • Oh well, that i don't know. I guess you can either attempt it or google it to see if someone had done it before :)

the hdd in general has gone up due to thailand flood, so in hunt for a 2tb external/power hdd, this is one of the cheapest i could find on the market, if stocks available. Most of the 2tb externals from various sites starts from $115+.
i bought the last one from my auspost shop today.
    good luck :)
