was expecting a discussion on shoes….then saw your 'low' budget is $500 :)
I've seen cheap machines that don't offer resistance settings and I don't understand the point, without resistance it's just light cardio. You definitely want to be able to add resistance, same with any kind of bike or rower you buy. How about renting a machine? Or looking for someone who bought one but was too lazy to use it.
Generally it is a good idea to scout GT or Marketplace for home gym stuff. There are many items sparingly used that you can get for a really good price.
