Not really, if you find one you like, which I've found a few under $500 that look great, do some research on it, even smaller bike companies are making nice bikes these days.
Can highly recommend Back4Bikes - although they are not selling bikes at the moment.
They fix up donated bikes and then sell them. You can go to their location in Port Melbourne and pick from the hundreds of broken bikes in their containers which one you would like and they'll fix it up and sell it to you. Got two kids 26" mountain bikes for about a $120 each and got my bike - hybrid adult for about $200.
The cost depends on the work involved in fixing them up and the parts used. Its a not-for-profit; so costs are low.
