Data SIM with a long expiry

Hey guys,

I'm just after a sim card I can use in my tablet. The situations is this: I've already got an iPhone with Telstra and I have the ability to use Personal Hotspot which I do plan on using when I'm out and about and wifi whilst I'm at home. The thing is, there are times where I may want to make a quick dash on Google or check my emails which becomes troublesome as I have to either do it on my phone or turn on Personal Hotspot then turn on wifi on my tablet to get access to the net.

So what I'm planing on doing is grabbing a simcard with a bit of data on there that I can use if I need to quickly Google something. Now if I plan on surfing the net for a while I'll just turn on Hotspot so this really is only for when I want to surf the net for <5mins. As a result, I'm not too concernes about the included data (4gb should be fine) rather I prefer something with a long expiry so I don't have to continuously recharge to keep it running.

Now I've been searching around and it seems most prepaid broadband started packs come without a fair bit of data however, the credit expires after 30 days (usually) and I have to end up recharging 12gb (around $150) to get 12 months access. At that price I can almost go on a 12 month plan with vodafone. So OzBargainers have you got a solution for me?

Thanks

  • Good question. I am in a similar boat. Just bought a tablet lately and contemplating on getting some data only sim, so that as OP, I can link up the net with it using the tablet every now and then, whilst other times I can use the hotspot feature on my smartphone which has 1.5 GB of data allowance to use on it. And at home with the wifi network.

At the moment I am steering toward the Telstra $150 prepaid with 10GB for 12 months. This plan works out roughly $12.50/mnth with 800MB of data per month to spread it across evenly over the year. Advantage for the Telstra Prepaid is my current network on the smartphone is Optus, so the Telstra network can compliment with Optus's in case of network difficulty in some location where the Telstra's shouldn't have trouble with. (on this point, never used Telstra myself but with the excellent Telstra coeverage I have heard of from others, so I believe this should be the case). The downside is having to offload quite a big sum upfront for this option.

Love to hear other's opinion on this, particularly if there is any way to reduce this upfront cost with "coupon code"? "cheaper online seller"? ect…,

    Thanks in advance.

  • im in the same boat and still searching….if you find a better/cheaper one please share.
