Deciding on a 24" Monitor for Gaming/Media

Hi OzB,

I am looking for a budget 24" monitor as a second screen for my laptop. It would mainly be for doing a bit of casual gaming and media consumption (youtube, netflix, etc). My main concerns are how good the colours look and how sharp the screens are. Refresh rate around 75Hz is good enough for me, and I also have separate desktop speakers so that is not much of a consideration either.

Currently I am tossing up between the Samsung, AOC and Acer ones linked below. Anyone with any experience with these have any input? Alternative suggestions are welcome too. Thanks in advance.

I would suggest that 24" is far too small nowadays for gaming or media consumption. Consider stretching to a 32" instead. IPS definitely the way to go though.

    • Not worth going above 24" for 1080p though (bad PPI)
24" is fine for me as a secondary screen (main being 1440p 27")
@OP: I can vouch for the AOC, but I'd recommend the 144Hz variant instead (24G2).

      • I tried the 24G2 and found that the screen was little grainy when browsing. it was very good for gaming though. While I'm not sure the samsung or acer ones would be any better, that was just what i noticed with the AOC 24G2.

    • thanks for the suggestion, but it is a bit out of my budget at the moment

All of the monitors you linked to are just 1080p FHD panels in 24 inches, so in terms of DPI or sharpness they are all identical.

I'd pick the AOC as the shipping is free and it has most of what you'll want in a monitor, including FreeSync and IPS panel with up to 300 nits brightness.

It doesn't have height adjustment, swivel (but it does a VESA 100mm mount ) or integrated USB hub so if you want those things probably look for a Dell Ultrasharp business monitor. Ultrasharp brand comes at a price premium though.

    • It baffles me that the original site and 3rd party sellers still use the image with the USB hub.

I'll definitely be using a VESA mount. Integrated USB hub sounds useful but, since most of my peripherals are already plugged into my laptop, I think I am fine without.

My room is fairly dark, would the nits only be a factor in a fairly bright room?
