I’m posting this at serious risk of getting some hate but I think this is a good price for a 9th gen i5 that can be overlclocked to over 5 ghz. Does not have the extra threads that the 10th gen does, but this is a seriously good gaming cpu that will perform better than the 3600 in most titles.

Worth considering if you will only keep the CPU for a year or two, but 6C/6T could well age very poorly, the way the old 4C/4T i5s have from a few generations prior.

Currently it's a good price for great gaming performance, though.

    • My 3500X already has a couple of games it gets pinned in, it's only a matter of time…

I do think this is a good price for 6C6T though.

      • What do you think about holding onto z390 series still but hoping to upgrade to a 9900k down the line where its 8cores 16threads and hopefully in the 300 to 400 dollar mark.

        • What do you use the PC for?

With PCIe gen 4 so far hasn't produced much real benefit yet, it seems like a cost effective plan. However, the next gen GPUs are quite enticing. Will they start realising the benefit of PCIe gen 4 and how much remains to be seen.

          • @netsurfer: I'm mostly gaming and using Microsoft office. But I do use a 2k 144hz monitor so I know how difficult it is for games to hit that 144fps mark on ultra settings as someone with a 5700xt.

I think at this point a 3300x would be the best value compare to this?

Also I personally hate how much you have to pay for a board that allows OC with Intel, a B450 or B550 board represents way better VFM.

I had an old i5 6600 I believe (5y old) and was still good at 1440p … just lower a few settings and it does great. Paired with a GTX 1070.

Recently upgraded 3700x, find the the games I play perform a little better but could also be because of a fresh hdd install.

Would think that a 9th gen 6c cpu would be good for at least 3+ years???

    • Yeah it'll be fine, only fps would be limited for high fps desire titles.

for most games when CPU bottlenecked you can always up graphical settings that have minimal impact on CPU performance, so better graphics at the same fps. When the GPU is bottlenecked in games, there is usually not much you can load up on the CPU without straining the GPU too.

motherboard situation kinda paints Intel into too expensive corner. if you take into consideration decent mobo plus cpu combination, overclocking possible and all, AMD is much better value

    • Isn't it still cheaper if you pair it with a Z390-A Prime from Amazon and a $75 cooler compared to a 3700X build? And it offers the same gaming performance

  • How would you guys compare with i5-10500?

    • +1

Comparable in terms of gaming if not better however worse in productivity compared to the 10500 due to the 10500 having more threads.

This isn't a bad choice if you're purely gaming only.

GamerNexus has a review on the 10400 which is basically the same as the 10500.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=csFwlKgZCzM

Why not get the 10400 instead of the 10500, there's barely a difference between them and also consider the 3600.

      • All good thanks for your response, friend of mine accidentally bought x 2 i5 -10500 couple months back, now spare, selling one to me $150 in box brand new.
        Seems pretty good then

        • Ahh I see. That's a really great deal.

    • A 9700k (8c/8t) performs about the same as a r5 3600 (6c/12t) in my experience

Which equates to HT adding about 30% performance (on ryzen at least)

If you aren't using more than 6 threads, by clockspeed they are basically the same. If you can use all 12 threads of the 10500, it will be 20-30% faster

the 10500 also has more cache. I would choose the 10500
