Portable Fast Storage

After seeing the $99 deal at Bing Lee for a Samsung T7 touch, was looking around for some fast portable storage. Looking at the USB 3.1/3.2/TB3 spec.

Some quick questions I'd love input on:

  • Anyone got any recommendations for a setup where I'm doing light editing (i.e. Photoshop and Lightroom) on an ultrabook?
  • Would using a portable HDD be a huge, noticable difference?
  • Thoughts on buying an SSD/NVMe drive and an enclosure (and any recommendations)?

Cheers

Quick question - do you need an NVMe drive? If you're not doing continuous writes to the drive like with video editing, then a SATA SSD will work quite well. Much better value.

A cheap Orico SATA to USB adapter will work well with any of the recent 2.5" SSD deals that have come up. Some of the newer models have native USB-C, assuming that's a restriction of your ultrabook.

A portable HDD will definitely feel slower to use, but that's compensated by the Tb/$ factor they still have; although I doubt I'll buy another HDD again the way SSD prices are falling. A portable HDD may still be faster than many USB drives, as some brands & models are… enthusiastic in their marketing. SSDs are much more consistent for speed than either.

    • Probably don't need NVMe if there's not a huge difference other than for sustained writes!

I'll take a look at the SATA enclosure you mentioned, a sub $100 1tb SATA SSD + enclosure would be optimal

  • Get yourself Asus ROG Strix Arion M.2 NVMe RGB SSD Enclosure.

They are on special @ $81 from US Amazon.

Slap a M.2 and you can hit 3.2 gen 2 speeds.

Thing to note.. Any SATA SSD you get will be limited by SATA gen 3 speed (600mbs) so even if you have a 3.1 encloser it will be bottlenecked via SATA.
