Just need to store a few Word documents sonny. Oh and Jenny's Hawaii trip photos. Will this be enough megawhatzits?

    • +6

You will need exactly 1.21 Giggawatts..

      • +3

"..what the hell is a giggawatt!?.."

  • So FAT.

    • +1

      Thicc

    • So big

    • dont fat shame..

  • Good price, holding out for the 28tb model at a good price, which I believe is the largest currently available.

  • SMR or na?

    • They're 2 12TB drives inside so CMR

  • +1

so this is basically 2 x 12tb red drives in a box?

    • Correct

    • Remember though that this is RAID 0, that means it uses striping over the two drives and there is no redundancy so if one drive fails you have lost all your data.

      • I assume you can change this?

        • Someone on Amazon said

          Achtung bei RAID 1 Spiegelung!

Which I assume means "this is actually RAID 1 and I'm very angry".

          Soo… maybe?

@miarn: WD market these external HDDs at the max drive capacities, in this case 24TB, but in smaller print on the box and within the documentation they then mention subject to RAID configuration of RAID0, and then state the device is in default config of RAID1 and capacity of 12TB just to confuse the newbie consumer.

I have had a couple of these in the past, but now use NAS boxes. I personally prefer NAS boxes, but for someone that wants to just plug and go and simple backup software these do the job very well. The actual WD RED HDDs are excellent as they are purpose built drives suitable for NAS boxes.

            • @et tu brute: If it indeed can be switched to RAID 1 (albeit with half the capacity) then I would consider it but a NAS box is still far more useful as you have already stated.

  • 24TB !! imagine how many pornhub videos can be stored on this!

    • +3

      *linux isos

      • Wikileaks documents

    • Who is actually storing that these days, online video streaming is a thing y'all…

      • Wait, you can stream porn?

        • There's porn on the internet?!

      • +3

        4k Netflix has nothing on a 4kmovie.True-hd 9.1. dtsma.remux.x265.2160p

        • Not much porn on Netflix.

Agree with you on movies etc. but do you really need to store uncompressed 4k blu-ray rips for porn?

  • Shuckable?

    • +3

Yes but if you're after shuckable drives you're better off with the standard WD 12TB externals. Cheaper and I think the white drives are rebadged reds?

Guess this one will give you guaranteed reds and a raid enclosure. $200 extra though…

  • Ugghhhh I don't need this, but bought…

  • Somebody give me a ring when these are around $400. Seeya mate

    • maybe the stolen one

  • Why on earth would you buy this over a NAS?

    • +1

Not everyone has the technical knowledge or will to deal with a NAS.

      • +1

You just plug it into your modem.

    • If you use it to store raw videos for editing and you have no need to stream it on a TV downstairs?

  • This has to be RAID-1 out of the box, the description must be a typo. RAID-0 out of the box would be supreme stupidity on WD's part.

    • +3

      You underestimate WD's marketing department

  • Dont use RAID-0 as backup drives

  • anyone get delivery on this with no packaging and its DOA?

    • Yikes, sorry to hear about that. That doesn't sound good.
