Single Din Android Auto Head Unit

Hey friends,

Just seeing if anyone has any experiences using the eBay android auto head units (mainly from China)? It is only for the work hoarse but can they really be that bad? Open to suggestions and people that have had personal experience?

Something like this?

None of these support Android Auto BTW, they just use Android as OS and a skinned Android UI

However there are some hacks floating around to install Android Auto and experience some limited AA functionality.

I've got a double din version of an older but similar unit. I wouldn't buy one ever again. They are slow as shit and I can barely run Spotify and Waze at the same time. There aren't any OS updates to it. I had to cut as second hand facia to make it fit. I'd recommend buying a proper Android Auto one locally. Something like a Sony AX1000.

    • You must have bought a crap one. I've been using mine for 4 years and I run Deezer/Waze simultaneously no issues.

@OP, do not buy these Chinese headunits because they are 'cheap'. You buy it because it's infinitely better than a standard head-unit if you know why you want the full Android OS. Buy a good one ~$400 or take the blue pill and stick with the usual mainstream Android Auto units from supercheap etc.

I’ve had several cheap Chinese units over the years. Latest one is android, but not android auto. They have all crashed, hanged, randomly rebooted and been slow and clunky to use. They forget settings all the time.

Last update for my wife’s car is a Sony unit. So much more reliable. But it did cost more and has less features.

  • My experience with these has been nothing but great.
Bought a double din Android 7 unit off Aliexpress for ~$230 and it hasn't skipped a beat. Easy self install took ~ an hour.

Yes if you're looking at running a heap of apps at the same time it'll lag, but if you're just looking at using it as a radio, GPS, Bluetooth receiver it's a no brainer with the unit running responsively. I purchased it as nothing in the shops comes close to the performance/features. Was pleasantly surprised at the sound quality, but to be honest my expectations were pretty low, wouldn't be able to tell the difference between it and a branded aftermarket stereo.

Only downside is yes it won't have Android Auto.

I'd assume however that given 3 years have passed since i purchased it the specs would have come a long way.

Also stay away from EONON, mines a Joying unit and it's great

  • Good to know about your experience, I'm thinking of getting the 1din joying 8.8
