Help Me Choose a Dual Dash Cam, and Installer (Sydney)

I want to install a front/back cam on my CX7 before going on a trip school hols. Timing probably means I can't get one from o/s.
I want it professionally wired in and out of the way.

I'm very confused about all the features, and whether I want/need them. GPS, motion sensing, wifi, all that stuff I don't know about. I thought getting parked footage would be good, but not sure how useful given the angles it can catch. I am parked more than driving, not sure if it kills the battery.

Given the angles of the cams, how useful is the parking feature? More likely you need to see the sides of the car. Or for breakins.

What would you recommend?

I don't have a budget. I mean if the install cost is going to be the biggest part, I'd rather get something that will last.

Where should I get the cam, and where installed? What's a ballpark install fee?

Should I get a specialist installer who also sell cams, or do I get a cam and go to any garage?

If price is no issue get a Blackvue 2 channel model to suit your needs as they are one of the best.
I haven't used these guys but they are in Sydney and prices seem to include installation.

    • Yeah, I havn't got an idea of install costs, but it seems 200-300 range. So I don't know whethe to save on a $100 cam or splashing on the $500 cam, if the install is the big chunk of it.

  • Check out bendas installations
Michael has been recommended on the whirlpool forums

Personally I would do my own research and purchase separately then ask an installer to do it (or DIY if you're comfortable… Im not). Dashcamtalk is a good site for reviews

may be Viofo A129. There were some deals before in OzB. I have single version which is A119 v3 and it is pretty good.

  • For example, Viofo A129 seems to have similar specs to the Blackvue DR750S2CH. Both Starvis and all the rest.
Only difference is a little res and fps.

why is one 200 vs 600?

    • I ended up ordering a 129duo a couple of days ago after watching a bit of dash cam owners Aus Facebook. Footage from the viofo cams actually looked better than on some blackvues I saw on there.

  • If budget is a factor, better to install it yourself than get a "professional" install.

It's as simple as sticking two cameras, one on the front and one on the back, and plugging it in.

If you want to it to be super neat, just YouTube the best spots to tuck it into. There are only a few spots that are hard to sneak under the airbags.

Parking mode is great. I like the thought that when my car is in the driveway, I have two extra CCTV which perps probably forgot to account for.

A fair install fee is $50 (more if they come to you). It's a one hour job without requirements for formal qualification nor exceptional skill.

    • Well budget confuses me, I have a mortgage I'll probably never finish paying off, so for something I don't have a grip on how much it's worth, I can just withdraw however much I need.

A pro install doesn't use the 12v port right? They wire it in hidden?

We don't park in the driveway, usually on the road. So it wouldn't catch much but the car parked in front or behind mostly?

Or if we go out, same thing, won't catch someone jimmy the door right? Or if it catches every pedestrian walking past…

"Pro" install uses a voltage cutoff like Blackvue's PMP and the fuse tap it into the fuse box. It sounds very technical but it is really not. Easier to mess up a sunny side up.

… and people skulking around, walking by, entering or exiting your property.

Catches everyone passing by. Remember, the value of a camera doesn't have to be catching someone in the act. There is significant value in placing someone at certain times.

        • Seems like parked mode buffered only lasts 20hrs or so.
          I'm parked 5 days at a time!
But I have CCTV at home.

          • @furyou: Yeah, Parked mode will be of limited use if you are parked a long time and do not have a dedicated battery arrangement for it.

Alternatively, you can get a lithium cranking battery which will allow you to run the camera for a full week easy.
