Can buy this phone outright for 120$ (ebay). Guess keep that in mind..

    • This sounds better than going into a 12 month contract with Vodafone!!

  • $19 a month for a 12 month plan with a reasonable phone and a bunch of calls is pretty good IMO. You cant expect the latest and greatest for 20 bucks!

    Whats a Nokia?

    • LOLz!

    • Still the world's largest manufacturer of mobile phones?

      • Apple?

Full disclosure: Not an Apple sheep.

        • Global smartphone shipments Q3

Company - Num of shipments - Market share
          Samsung – 27.8 million shipments 23.8%
          Apple – 17.1 million shipments 14.6 %
          Nokia - 16.8 million shipments 14.4%
          Others - 55.3 million shipments 47.3%

So yeah, Apple overtook Nokia, but they certainly aren't anywhere close to Samsung.

        • Nokia is still the largest mobile phone manufacturer overall.

If you are counting dumbphones (aka Feature phones) then yes, Nokia ranks as the largest manufacturer.

  • Cannot recommend not taking this deal enough!! Even if you were to ignore the carrier, the phone is several generations old in terms of tech. I've owned an E75. It is one of the nice "E" - Enterprise series phones, so it's a nice metal finish and has a professional look (of 2003) but other then that it's clunky, heavy and slow. Go pickup an Aldi Android for <$100 on prepay.

    • Yeah wouldn't touch anything running Symbion, Nokia killed themselves when they failed to jump on the Android band wagon.

  • No thank you. Android Gingerbread is light years ahead of Symbian S60 in terms of polish, usability and functionality. That's coming from an ex-Nokia E71 user. The hardware is pretty good though, but that's the only pro.

Hell no. I'd prefer to get an Ideos U8150 for $59 at Aldi and pay $11/Month on LiveConeected Postpaid… twice the amount of credit/7 x the amount of data and no lock in contract…

    59/12 = $5 (roughly)

    $11/Month LC plan + $5/Month phone = $17/month

    No deal.

    • The Nokia has a slide-out hardware keyboard and some users may prefer this to a tiny 2.8 inch touch screen (I know for a fact my Dad would easily take this Nokia over an IDEOS U8150 or X1).

I don't think live connected is true post paid. Going by my current bill from them issued today, they list the access fee for the current month (November) and charge it to your credit card on 7th November. That's how I see it anyway. Their bills are very confusing, you just about need a PhD to read them especially if you changed plans during the previous month.

Looks like they're just trying to offload old outdated models to unsuspecting ozbargainers.

I have not seen either of these phones in a retail store this year. They are 2.5 and 2 years old respectively.

      "unsuspecting ozbargainers"

Contradiction in terms??? Given this is an active forum. I agree that Voda are likely clearing old stock of this handset that was released in 2009. However few reps from serious companies would think that posting in OzB would be a good place for positioning product in front of a naive group of potential customers.

Link to compare this model to the E71:-
      http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=2688&idPhone2=…

For those wanting touch-screen rather than qwerty I agree that Android is the better option.

      • In contrast, serious companies often make mistakes and poor judgements in managing social media (and judging the market), and Vodafone reps don't have the best track record on here it seems.

Don't worry, I have enough knowledge about the phones. In the end I said it's not a bad deal in itself, the handsets are a little old, but I'd consider the E75 for a family member to keep in touch with.

    Nokia is History!

  • This might be old, but this is a "new" phone to Vodafone. Its actually a 850/1900/2100, so Vodafone probably tracked down a batch of these 850 to push its new 850 network.

Otherwise, if this is a batch left over from 09', it should have been 900/1900/2100 instead.

    • Fair point, I noticed that as well after I posted my first comment.

The 3G bands aren't mentioned for the 5230 though.

  • $19 a month for a 29 cap isn't bad itself, plus you get an usable/backup phone
it also free vodafone to vodafone, which for me its about 80% of my calls and is the only reason i never go over

plus, you won't be so upset after you smash your phone to bits in frustration at the dropped calls

      $19 a month for $180 credit? LOL. LiveConnected $16/Month - $650 Credit + 2GB Data + 6000 Free texts.

It's seems like a bit of a rip off when there PrePaid 30 cap gives you $450 credit + 500MB data.

Well I've changed my mind, I don't think it's a great deal, but it does have some positive aspects.

There are a few people out there with plenty of friends and family who are on 3/Voda and this would be a cheap way for them to get involved with the free included calls, with an OK handset. The handsets are a bit old, but I think for the total cost of $228 over 12 months it will suit some people who want to keep in touch with family.

I'd get it for my mum, who right now doesn't have a phone for example, so she could keep in touch with the family who are all on Vodafone or 3. Liveconnected, TPG etc are good for those people who make calls to people on a number of networks and use a bit more data, but I guess that's a different market.

Only neg from me would be after 12 months they stop taking the $10 off per month, but then you can leave or look for other deals anyway.

I hate Vodafail, and all, as it's let me down over two continents and three countries, buuuut, it looks like it's $29 * 12 - $10 * 12 for a 12 month contract. So, after 12 months, it makes no sense to stay on the plan anyway, either sign a new plan, and get a new phone (to sell, use, whatever), or go onto prepaid.

Either way though, the deal is a massive markup on an old phone.

        • yeah that's what i was trying to say, i probably use the equivalent of $200+ a month on VtoV and 3 which comes free. On optus this would mean being on the higher caps.

plus i got 4 months free and 10% off each month when I did mine, the equivalent of $21/month with a $350 mobile (at the time)
