Looks good but you’d want to be very serious about your DACs at that price. You can get a very decent DAC from about $250, after that your just chasing deminshing returns on your $$s. Or if you’re not serious about audio at all you can get a pair of ‘dax’ from Kmart for about $5 🤣

    • But it looks pretty, and has massive XLR sockets on the back.

    • A VERY decent one. My topping d30 was about half that and the sound is very good.

Strongly diminishing returns as they go higher.

after that you're just chasing diminishing returns on your $$s

Absolutely right. You gradually transition from actual quality to perceived quality which is fine if that makes you happy. Unfortunately - or should I say thankfully - I've seen too many audiophiles fail the blind test to buy into it myself.

    • To be fair this is much more than just a DAC though. The remote, volume/tone controls, headphone amp etc make it more useful. $1500+ is not unreasonable given the quality and features.

      • My SMSL AD18 does all that at fraction the cost.

        • Except the (external) DAC part.

Good dac, drivers can be a bit crap. Drives full sized headphones easily as well as super sensitive IEMs.I got mine via price match at Manny’s/Store DJ earlier this year for $1599.

  • Anyone bought from them before ? Does it comes with tax invoice ?

    • +1

Asked the seller , it is an import so GST is not included . So need to factor in at least another 160 .

  • My SMSL AD18 DAC/Amp has been surprisingly good. Is this $1500 better ?

    • +1

The SMSL won’t do you much good as a DAC between a source and amplification since it doesn’t have any outputs (excluding headphone). Just like this DAC won’t be good at powering speakers since it doesn’t have the amps.

You need to compare to a DAC, with remote, volume control and balanced outputs.

      • I get what you are saying. Thanks.

          No worries.

On the surface it seems stupidly expensive, but for the target markets like high-ish end hi-fi and studio it’s really not. (That’s not me by the way, I just understand what it is. It cost more than all 4 of my amps put together. )

@watts: I agree. Spent a few grand on Dali + Cambridge Audio myself. I use RPi3 + Khadas Tone board DAC + Volumio.
I also have it connected to a Bush (Blaupunkt) internet / DAB radio - which is amazingly convenient (Display/FM/DAB/Internet/Spotify/BT/Smart Control) and a decent enough DAC.

Got couple Paradigm legacy speakers from a garage sale - which I drive using AD18, in another room. Obscenely good combo for ~$250.

Problem with high-ish end audio gear is mediocre quality music really sounds very very mediocre. Like using E10 on E class.

I think after a certain grey line, its all about bragging rights.

            • @r0nmac: As one purchases better headphones it becomes more obvious if the DAC and amplifier are lacking. If that is a lack in how good the DAC and amplifier are at reproducing the audio and/on if they do not provide enough power, it still becomes obvious.

I wouldn't consider this DAC headphone amp for something like ATH M50. I would consider it for Focal Clear that has been on sale and mentioned on OzB. If someone has the money they want to spend on more expensive headphones then they may want to get the most out of them.

One of the good things about this DAC is inbuilt equaliser, which is really useful. It also has coaxial and optical inputs. They are useful if you have a CD player.

This DAC is more built for pro audio (I.e. people who make music). Better quality is needed there.

PS. I don't own this DAC.

          • @watts:

            target markets

people with wealth. Unfortunately, charity isn’t obvious value for money.

            • @AlexF: That applies to more than audio. Alcohol, cars, clothes, and a lot more.

            • @AlexF: The wealthy can buy DACs costing 10x this with half the functionality.

anything equivalent in specs and features, that’s not made in China, will be a similar price. I don’t think there’s any charity.

              • @watts:

                I don’t think there’s any charity.

Charity is way to shed excess wealth.

                • @AlexF: And how is that relevant to this product?

                  • @watts: This product’s target market is people wanting to shed excess wealth, but not through charity.

    • +1

      Is this $1500 better ?

There’s no direct relationship between price and performance - at best, it’s tenuous - ASR reviews commonly prove this.

  • Is this the same as DJCity are selling for $1599? - EDIT nevermind I see there are two versions $1599 and $2189
