Kids Full Face Bicycle Helmet < $100

Looking for a full-face kids bicycle helmet for less than $100. Preferably with the chin-guard being removable.

Catch.com.au have them in the $200-500 range. Wish.com have them for as low as $31 but I'd presume they are not Australian Standards compliant.

Is sub-$100 unrealistic?

For a bicycle helmet I think it will be difficult. You could try a dirtbike helmet as they seem to be cheaper. But heavier. The bicycle helmet are lightweight hence the additional cost.

LOL @ Wish… There is a reason the one on Wish is $31. Just have to Google or YouTube "Wish.com comparison or review" videos to find out.

That being said, you want to be looking up BMX or MTB helmets. I would think that a decent one would be around the $100 to $200. It all depends on what you are protecting. Is it for an older child and are they riding downhill MTB, in which case I would spend more to get a better helmet, or is it for your 5yo kid that is riding in the park, where a cheaper helmet might suffice?

    • is it for your 5yo kid that is riding in the park

Lol - when's the last time you saw a 5 year old kid at the park with a full face helmet? More likely the 5 year old kid is going to use the helmet to cover their face in an armed robbery.

Preferably with the chin-guard being removable.

Don't do it. If you genuinely need a full face helmet, the removable chin bar just adds a point of weakness. No point being half-as*d when choosing a helmet.

I'd presume they are not Australian Standards compliant

I don't know about Bicycle helmets, but the standards around Motorcycle helmets were relaxed (or improved, depending on which side of the fence you're on) in NSW (and probably other states) to allow the use of European certified helmets.

I don't see many people using full faced bicycle helmets on the street, so I'm guessing you'll use it off-road, etc, so the certification might not be so important.

You might find a suitable helmet as a grey import. Amazon US is a good place to start. The aussie dollar is up.

  • Thanks guys for the responses.

I searched everywhere and found one for $89 and one for $129, but neither had my son's size. My son is 9 years old and actually he seems to be in the adult XS or S size range.

I'm now searching for MTB helmets to at least get the extra back and side protection.

He's not doing downhill dirt trail speed racing, so most would say full-face isn't necessary, and maybe the additional heat and hearing obstruction make them a bad idea. For that reason a removable chin guard makes sense to me if not doing serious trail racing. The weakness is in the chin attachment, not the shell itself.

  • Arai RX-7V should do the trick.
