Online RTO refund?

Hi all, not sure if this is the place to ask.
Earlier this year I signed up to complete a certificate 3 and 4 in fitness using an online RTO.
I'm finding myself unable to complete this course for a number of reasons (we ignore the questionable quality of the course for the time being), these reasons including a change in work circumstance which has left me with minimal time to complete the course, as well as COVID affecting my ability to get a mentor which is required to complete the course.

I had completely accepted this as lost money, however during these hard times I feel the money would be better in my pocket if possible.

Any information or anyone having gone through something similar will be greatly appreciated. Will definitely be more careful if I decide to use an RTO in the future.
Thanks

  • I work in tertiary education; unlikely you can use a change in work circumstances to get your money back. You need to demonstrate how the special circumstances:

    • were beyond your control
    • did not make their full impact on you until on or after the census date
    • made it impracticable for you to complete the course requirements
  • +2

I used to work in online RTOs and for the most part the T&Cs are not in your favour.

If you can find a way to put the onus on them- inadequate support, poor course material, unachievable deadlines, etc then you might be able to squeeze a partial refund out of them as an appeasement so you don't complain to ASQA, but you need to build a case.

If you still want to complete the qualification an option might be to negotiate an extension or deferrment. It won't help financially but it'll buy you time and ease the pressure for now so at least it's not a total loss.
