Recommendation: Premium Nut Mixes

While working from home, I decided to improve my snacking game and have switched to a small bowl of nuts in the afternoon instead of less-healthy options like chocolate and/or chips.

We were going through close to 1kg per fortnight and, at $18-26 per 500g (local supermarkets and our local independent nut shop) for a premium* salted nut mix from I decided to see if I could find a cheaper option. Doing a DIY mix - needing to roast some raw kernels where not available roasted; adding salt etc - was a pain in the arse and I was not happy with the result.

Someone recommended Santos who I always believed were just a wholesaler. Nup! They sell direct to public and they are CHEAP considering the quality and freshness of the product. Postage to my location in Sydney is $10 but if you push the order over $100 it's free delivery.

Reason for posting today? I placed an order around lunchtime yesterday (Sunday). It was delivered by courier at 3.05pm today. Awesome service.

This is NOT an infomercial and I have NO association with them other than being a very happy customer (and now advocate).

Hope this helps someone.

Lol the photo of the salted deluxe mix has like a million almonds and cashews and literally one macadamia (maybe 1.5!) and one brazil nut. Sounds about right.

    • I have the actual product in front of me.

      Product > packshot ;-)

      Heaps of macadamias!

are we class shaming peanuts now?

    • +1

I am. If wanted a mouthful of povvo peanuts I'd have a teaspoon of peanut butter ;-)

They are fiddly, greasy little bastards. Not great for grabbing a few and carrying-on typing….my keycap grease.

      Peanut lives matter!! :P

  • I am a regular user and usually consume about 2-3 kilo per month. Used to buy in bulk from The Nut Shop. Now have shifted to get it from Nuts About Life and can't be any happier - its cheaper, fresher and tasty.

    • Hey fellow Nut Lover ;-p

The Nut Shop factory is within walking distance of home and they have some of the better-quality mixes (freshness and ratio of macadamias/Brazils to almonds etc) but now $36/kg.Ooof.

Santos also ship in super-thicc zip-locked resealable bags which is nice, too (rather than those thin, crackly, single-use poly bags)

Checking out Nuts About Life now. Thanks for the tip!

I think from your comments you need to add roasted.

Premium roasted mix: Every now and then Aldi do one for $20/kg. Woolworths same.

You can get unroasted walnuts - $14-16/kg & roasted almonds $13ish/kg. E.g. I include one in cereal and snack on the other. I'm over roasted cashews after a huge Woolworths special and Macadamias after a Coles special; re Brazil nuts don't consume too many a day due to selenium content.

      Absolutely right. Roasted and salted.

      selenium content

Just googled selenium to understand the +ve and -ve of the stuff. Very interesting! Today I learned…thank you.

  • Coles sell Almonds and Cashew nuts for $9 for 500G and $18 for 1Kg. Santos is expensive i.e. $12.5 for 500G and $24 for 1kg .

TBH coles quality is not good but its cheap

    • TBH coles quality is not good but its cheap

Yeah, I definitely balance quality with price. For me, $24/kg is good value for freshness and the variety/ratios in their mix

Agreed . If its fresh and roasted perfectly then definately worth it .

Coles roasted almonds sometimes are burnt from inside . I mean litereally dark brown from inside but cant tell from outside .taste awfull .

ALDI nuts are better but havent bought enough to comment
