Advice with how much I should negotiate for a Ford Mustang

Edit: We ordered it. 69,500 and free first service. I think everyone was happy with that.

Hey guys, another one of these threads, sorry!

I'm going to buy a Ford Mustang. We went into a dealership yesterday and specced up what we want and the price is around $76k. The salesman offered us a price of $73k. The car needs to be made to order and will probably take around 5 months to be delivered. I'm going to call up all the dealerships in Sydney and see what the best price I can get is over the next week. Here are my questions…

  1. Any idea what price I should be paying?

  2. Should I call up dealers outside of Sydney?

I'm new to Australia, and this is the first car I'll be buying here. It's also the first new car I've ever bought. I'm not flexible on the spec, so buying used, demo's, cars off the forecourt is not an option.

Thanks!

  • Sounds like you are just worried what people will think of you if you pay top dollar. Don't worry they will already know when they see you driving.

Its not what people think of me at all, I just don't want to be had by paying 5k more than a fair price sort of thing you know. If 70k is the going rate then great, but I dont wanna pay more than the average sale price.

      • In that case just pay what you think the car is worth. If you still don't have any idea check carsales, find the cheapest one and tell them to beat it.

      • I don't understand why you feel the need to call around, deal with all that etc.

You have a set target in mind (10%, so around $70k give or take). Local dealer is offering you a joyride in the car without even having commitment. Just hit them up with the offer and see how you go. You obviously have a relationship there that will pay dividends over the next 5 months, and beyond.

        • I will speak to them when I return the car with a view to make a deal. That's obviously why they're giving me the car, but I still appreciate it and they get first bid with me.

          • @camelfarmer1: Hmmm if they know you want to buy they will have no motivation to give you a fair price. Be ready to walk away in a negotiation. I think you know the price you want to pay.

Has there ever been any thread where the OP actually listened to responses?

Even I set I a thread about hating my in laws and everyone told me to get a divorce. I tried but my wife wouldn’t let me get a divorce (I even downloaded stuff online to get her to sign it with my side being signed already, even though it’s probably not real and probably needs a lawyer).

Mustangs are literally shitty rental cars in the States, my mate's over there call them American Kia's. Why you'd think they're worth anything over $50k is laughable.

    • Its laughable that you thought your opinion was going to add anything. Why did you feel the need to reply to this thread? You really must have very little going on.

Order a Tesla Model 3 instead. Best cars every. You wont regret it. Save you money ongoing service/maintenane cost.

Dude how in the world do you think this is helping.

The true worth of a ford mustang is about 1$. Anything over that and you are paying too much. Buy a better car. Unless you have a small p***s, in that case it's totally justified.

Are you really a camel farmer? Are you raising camels for milk or meat? I have so many questions.

Bought a high spec 2019 new by listening to my heart. Wish I listened to my brain and bought a Camry.

    • +1

      Why do you regret it?

      • +1

Hell I would!Be embarrassing to drive it!

Look and see what a car broker will do for you

  • +1

Jeez, not sure i understand the mustang hate….Sure, i wouldnt buy one if i was spending 70k on a new car (would only spend that sort of money if i earnt 150k+ a year personally…) but they are still a nice looking, powerful, no doubt fun to drive car. If people have negative feelings about them, maybe just move along…

    • +1

I do earn about 160k a year and the wife works full time as well. We usually spend our spare money on holidays, but this year we can't do that. We don't have kids or any other expensive commitments.

      • cant fault the logic…! You wont be able to get one once you have kids!

        • +1

We are not going to have kids.

      • -3

        Oooo big man flexing.
He earns 160k and drives a stang. Lookout yo.

        • +3

Dude I responded to someone specifically stating an annual salary. I dont care what people think about my car, I do care how it makes me and my wife feel.

    • +1

In general, a 70K car is still too much for someone earning only around 150K a year pre-tax and no real assets owned. I drive cars worth WAY more than that and bought them all outright comfortably and fixed assets paid off, but each to their own.

      • Flexxy mcflex-flex.

      • Ah but my wife is earning decent money also. And based on our monthly savings its a little bit of a stretch, but not so much that it concerns me. You don't actually have all the information to make the statement you made as confidently as you did.

        • Yes I don't, that's why it's just a general statement. Good luck anyway. I'm a car enthusiast too, so I do understand the passion.

      • +3

        Ah the car enthusiast flex.
        It's the best kind.

Agreed, even still a bit too much for a (combined) income of anything less than 500k if you are in your late-20s/early 30s - the opportunity cost and long-term compounding rewards of putting 70k down on mortgage is too great to pass up. Especially when you can get so many enjoyable performance/sports vehicles for half the price if you buy used. That said, that's just a personal opinion and view, no criticism of OP who naturally has their own values and situational factors. As an exception, I'd be warmer to it if claiming the depreciation as a business expense.

    • @JuryWheel,they hate because they can.You will always get more negativity than positivity,I just let it flow off like a water off a ducks back.Their problem not mine! I am enjoying the car, just stocked with it!

  • +6

I DONT CARE ABOUT PRICE BTW CAN YOU GUYS GET ME A GOOOD PRICE.

    • hi hope youv been well - What is turn around time for Code to arrive

  • So, has anyone got around to ascertain the the current industry redbook price range for a Stang!?

  • Not that this helps @camelfarmer1 - but I wish we had a service like carwow that allows you to actually compare car prices.
Buying a car is so un-transparent. At least when you buy a house, you can look up what other people have paid recently for similar houses - buying a car, who knows what people pay? Even with Carsales - its hard to tell what people actually haggled to, versus the listing price.

    • Maybe we should start it up? For some reason i thought there was a service where you can say "i want xx, gimme your best price" and the dealers would "bid" on your sale.

    • Yeah carwow in the uk helps with the exact process im doing now.

  • +2

I think you should be 100% negotiable with your car choice.

  • What a strange thread here. No one knows the question to answer 1, and in my experience number 2 doesn't make a difference.

If your question is regarding the offer you have, maybe you should check out the mustang whirlpool forum, people often give their spec and the price they negotiated.

But playing around on redbook, you aren't going to get anything sizeable over $73K if you want that specific spec and brand new.

    • -1

I don't think the true OZbers would consider a new car like a Mustang. Corolla or Camry if new the more likely car. Maybe OP loom at other forums as you say.

I drove a bright red mustang for a week. I felt like a dick and it wasn't great to drive. It felt really cheap and nasty.
I'd never drop 70k on one.

  • Put down $1k deposit to bring the car in. When the car is in, forgo the deposit. Then get your wife to go in and negotiate on the customised floor stock that is now stuck.

    • When the car is in, forgo the deposit

On what grounds? The dealer can chase you for up to 15% of the purchase price if you just decide to pull out

      • -1

Not sure. Depends on contract. Last time went to purchase a car with a friend, and specific clause insert, refundable deposit subject to approval of finance by xxxx bank arranged by buyer. End up getting deposit back coz he got rejected on the loan.

They didn't care because it is an existing stock on their floor.

  • Two new GT in local dealer yard - down to $66k & $69k when last past there.

Earns 6 figures but buys a Ford? Lol
