How to Install Additional SSD in The Leaper Air Maxx Case?

I've never built my own PC before, so opted for one of the techfast builds and am very happy with it so far. I want to add an SSD but not really sure where to begin. I've tried looking up the case online but not having much luck with available info.. here's the case https://techfast.com.au/products/bundled-leaper-air-maxx-rgb…

Anyone else have this case and add their own SSD willing to lend a hand to a noob?

PC specs;
AMD B450M-A PRO MAX
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 6GB Graphics Card
16GB DDR4 3200MHZ RAM
AMD Ryzen 5 3500X Processor
650W 80+ Bronze Power Supply

Thanks in advance

  • Other than how to open it, the case itself is less of a concern than which motherboard you have. This potentially coupled with the need for a power connection from the PSU if the SSD cannot be directly powered by the motherboard.

More details are required to assist, best to list your full PC spec.

    • Thanks mate, added to OP

      • Not sure which brand motherboard that is, but even if it is a Biostar you should be able to insert an NVME (M.2) SSD straight on the board, which is pretty easily done.

You will likely need to tweak a BIOS setting to get it recognised, but hopefully someone with a little more knowledge of your specific setup will be able to guide you on this.

Plenary of deals have popped up on here recently, just search NVME.

  • Why do you want to add an ssd?

    • It only came with 240gb, so wanted to add 500GB for my frequently used games, then a HDD for the rest

  • You'll need the SSD, an SSD data cable and an SSD power cable.

Does your psu have a spare power cable? (You can google what it looks like). If there is one, then buy a data cable and the SSD, and simply plug them all in.

  • Would help if you open the case and take a picture for us all.

Model number corresponds with MSI..should find an m2 slot between the ram CPU and graphics card.. easiest option no cabling required
Mechanical HDD mounts vertically below the front case fan. Will need grommets, mounting screws data cable and sata/molex power cable(hack job use cable ties)
Similar for mounting a sata SSD case I think has room behind the motherboard, on the base of the case or near front fans…depends where original ssd is mounted.
Are you planning to leave the original ssd in place as the boot drive? .. slightly more complicated to migrate os..
All relatively simple but hard to gauge your definition of noob..

I think they have a mounting area under the psu shroud…..If you can wait till Monday I will have my own Leaper Air Maxx(Same PSU) and I'll see about doing a basic guide(I have both a 2.5" SSD and two NVME drives to install)

      • That would be legendary! There's a tonne of perfectly valid questions in here that I'm not 100% on, but seeing both types installed would help immensely. Cheers!

          No problems :)
Edit: Here is a link with some info on your motherboard: https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/B450M-A-PRO-MAX
and here is the manual pdf: https://download.msi.com/archive/mnu_exe/mb/M7C52v1.2.pdf these may help you when following instructions.
Edit2: Here is a basic install for a 2.5 ssd: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8M-NmDNTho I'll try to tailor it to the leaper Maxx when I have the system. :)
Edit3: Here is what I believe your PSU(Gigabyte P650B) is: https://www.gigabyte.com/Power-Supply/Power-Supply#kf On the page you will find the SATA cables to be of interest for HDD's :)

@Forfiet: I have the computer, now I have to test if it's working but I find the case has two places for SSD's on the right of the motherboard(One which is occupied by a SSD Already…) These are labeled so won't have a problem finding them. So I'll post some pics of where to install a second drive and a basic wiring guide either later today or tomorrow.

Edit: Wow, the side panel(not the tempered glass) is very hard to remove….I'm checking if the there is any addition catches(apart from the two screws) but geeze I've never had this much issue getting a side panel off…. Anyway I've taken a few pics to illustrate the second ssd bay and while I could install it as it is… I want to preform some cable management by threading the sata cable through the back…. if I can get the sside panel off :(

            • @Forfiet: Thanks mate. Getting the side panel off is kinda where this whole post stemmed from. I did manage to get it off just last night, and the cables are a mess, but all the terms used above are starting to make a lot more sense after referencing them against the links you provided :)

To get the side panel off it's just the 2 screws and then the whole panel needs to slide towards the back. It was a bit stiff at first but once it slid the whole thing popped right out.

Thanks again for all the help!

@Benjamin7711: Yeah, I've already installed one of the hdd's and I'll get some pics ready….still need to install the Nvme drives still.

Here is where I installed the second drive(the WD Blue) https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/102691/82454/img_20200…

And here is the NVMe drive being installed….note the angle it has to be inserted before pushing down and screwing it in place.(Those screws may not be in the pack tho :( )

After installing any new SSD or NVMe drive you will have to 'initialise' the drive by going to 'Disk Management'. To reach this, right click on the start menu and select Disk Management from menu. Once in the program it usually will detect and provide you prompts to get the drive setup and formatted….

If you need more help just ask and I'll try to guide you as best as I can :)

@Forfiet: You've been such a massive help, thanks heaps for going out of your way to guide me. I feel pretty confident now to install one myself :) I haven't actually bought one yet, but now understanding the different types I'll be placing an order most likely with Umart and will pickup a spare Sata cable while I'm there! Thanks again

You might need a sata cable or 2 when adding for ssd/hdd.
My techfast had only 2 cables included- 1 for o/s used already.

Assuming it is a 2.5" SATA ssd:

    1. plug sata data cable from motherboard to SSD
    2. plug sata power cable from powersupply to SSD
    3. Optionally screw it into a 2.5" bay in the case. SSD's dont have any moving parts so you don't actually have to worry about physically securing the drive much. You could just tape it down somewhere honestly. With hard drives you had to worry as they had moving parts, but not so with SSDs.

If it is a M.2 SSD: Plug into motherboard, screw down into motherboard.

  • Any review on the Leaper Air mount? Looks like it's the only one that fits my omnidesk pc mount.
