Which Ultrawide ~34" with USB-C Monitor Should I Get?

Been on the look out for Ultrawide curved monitor with USB-C connectivity for my Macbook Pro - I definitely want the USB-C so I can use the monitor as a hub & charger. MBP's USB-C only is a PITA.

Budget is around ~$8-900. I have short listed to
Samsung 34" LC34H892WGEXXY $819
https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Monitors/25plus-inch/822…
65W charging.

Philips 34" 346B1C-75 $899
https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Monitors/25plus-inch/830…
Has built in LAN, speakers, KVM switch, 95W charging.

LG 35" 35WN75C-B $899
https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Monitors/25plus-inch/836…
Has built in speakers, 95W charging.

I'm not sure if I'm missing out on any others around this size and price point.

I'm mainly using it for work/productivity purposes - bit of basic photo & video editing (apple photos and iMovie).
So I guess colour/sharpness would be most important.

I'm in Melbourne, so I can't visit any stores to check them out.

Any advice on any of the above, or others?

TIA.

  • I would probably get the Philips.

    • There is a poll for a reason, for you to vote on it!

      • Philips has the highest colour accuracy and Samsung only has 65W charging. Philips also has a KVM switch if you have a desktop too.

What else is there to consider?

No I am just saying that you should just click on the poll options of this post as you haven't done so as of yet

Just something to consider, in case you haven't already. I've got a Dell XPS which only has two USB C ports.

I use one to charge my laptop. And another is connected to a dongle (this one: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/386163). The dongle has a HDMI port, USB A ports, etc.
If you were willing to do something like this, you would have more monitors to choose from. A USB-C-to-HDMI cable or USB-C dock would probably give you similar options too.

For photo/video editing, I would imagine that image quality and color accuracy would be significant factors in your buying decision?
For image quality, perhaps an IPS panel would be a better option (all 3 you listed use VA panels).
For color accuracy, you will want to look at Color Gamut ratings such as AdobeRGB/sRGB. You may also care about how many Nits it can output.
A matte coating (non-reflective) is usually preferred as well.

    • Yeah, I did consider getting a Hub, then getting a monitor, but seems so hard deciding which to go for then!
Just wanted the convenience of one cable sticking into the laptop, out of sight etc.

I’ve got the Samsung display, and I’m really quite pleased with it (although I paid $749 a while back at Centrecom).

The display quality and viewing angles are good, and the lack of speakers isn’t a big issue for most uses. USBC passthrough works well, and it charges my 13” MBP at full rate. Overall would recommend without much hesitation, especially at a good price.

One small thing to consider- the built in stand is not exceedingly well designed, and takes up quite a lot of space relative to the display size. This wouldn’t be an issue on a very large desk, but I found myself quite frustrated By the wasted space. I worked around this by mounting the monitor on a gas strut (I used a Silverstone ARM-12b, which was around $120). Probably something to keep in mind.

    • Thanks for the feedback!

  • I bought my wife the Phillips for her Chromebook, the Ethernet and Power delivery over USB-C were the main reasons I chose it over the Samsung. I believe it also had a longer warranty.

    • Are you guys happy with it? Brightness, Colour etc?

      • My wife says yes. Its a work from home setup, primarily used for documents, so we aren't really pushing the colour boundaries.

  • What did you end up getting?

    • I ended up getting the Philips 34".
Colour is adequate for my use.

Things that influenced my decision - Samsung has large footprint that forks out for the stand - bit annoying hence didn't go for it.
Speakers built in for the Philips.

Cons for Philips after owning it
      - Speakers - no volume control unless you go through the whole menu - and even at volume setting 1. It's pretty loud. Can't even use the volume buttons on my MBP to control volume. Have to use the volume slider bars in the apps OR change the sound output back to MBP.

      • Ah cool, how come you didn't get the LG?

        • It wasn't in stock.

Also didn't have as many ports as Philips and it's rear access, whereas Phillips is side access.

I'll give this monitor to my wife in a year or two and go for something like a 43" or 49" when the prices drop a bit. IPS would be a bonus.
