Upgrading the CPU from an i5 7600k

Hey Everyone!

Recently I got my hands on a 2070 Super and it has been awesome so far. However I feel like my CPU (i5 7600k) is bottle-necking hard.
I play a lot of open world and battle royale style games and I guess these are more CPU heavy.

Anyone have any idea what a good upgrade would be?

Really aiming to get 144+ fps at 1080p and 100+ fps at 1440p for future in games. Mainly playing Warzone exclusively at the moment.

I have around a $600 budget and was looking at the R7 3700X but then I would need to change mobo as well.

Do you think its worth jumping now or waiting for the 4000 series to come out? Thanks guys.

You can get a better idea of what is actually bottlenecking by running gpu-z and checking the sensors tab where you can see graphs of cpu and gpu usage. It's probably the CPU though and I think six cores should be a minimum now.

Personally I'd get an Intel 10600K as it's slightly better for gaming but there is not much difference to a 3700X and AMD leaves you with more flexibility if you decide to stream. But that will require new Intel motherboard socket LGA1200

So for $600 I'd go 9900K, keep and keep your existing motherboard assuming it can take K processors.

    • erm… this is intel

kaby to coffee , requires new mobo

  • I definitely think your CPU is bottlenecking your GPU. Depending on your budget, R5 3600 would be perfect pair for your 2070S (I've got the same pair). Or if you want intel, i5 9600K would be ideal as well.

The i5 7600k is bottlenecking the system by about ~25% assuming it's not overclocked and you have at least 16 GB ram. If you simply want to eliminate the bottleneck a Ryzen 5 2600 paired with a cheap B450 board will get the job done for ~$350. Your next step up would be a Ryzen 5 3600 with a cheap B550 for $450 then finally the Ryzen 7 3700x like you mentioned with a decent B550 for $650.

I wouldn't worry about upgrading to a 9900K as it's about $500 and will get matched by the Ryzen 5 3600 or beaten by the 3700X plus if you sell your old i5 7600k and motherboard you should be able to get ~$250 back.
