Bought a seagate external hard drive last week.
Did a warranty check online and it's already out of warranty.
Product is new but probably has been sitting on shelf for 3 years.
Is it still covered under warranty if it fails or should I go back to store and try and get a refund?

Warranty normally starts when you buy it from a retailer with a receipt / proof of purchase. You should be able to register the drive to start the warranty
In Australia, the warranty starts from the date of purchase as indicated on the proof of purchase.
However some manufacturers (usually not based in Australia) have different ways of assessing period of warrant. In any case, as long as you can proof the date of purchase, you will have warranty somehow. (even if it is out of manufacturer's warranty, the retailer has do work something out for you.)
just make sure the serial number is on the receipt!!!
No serial. Just says Seagate 2GB.
2GB? That seems tiny these days…
@John Kimble: Oops 2TB.
Hmmmm you might have some issues then, try contacting seagate now and see what they say and if they can adjust the warranty in the system to reflect your new purchase date.
Its clearly 'old' stock if its expired already. Not that there is anything wrong with that other than making the warranty harder.
Seagate were really good when I had to RMA a 5TB 2.5" USB 3.0 external HDD bought from Newegg USA in 2018.
The drive developed the dreaded "clicking noise" about 5-6 months laterprobably due to me dropping it (oopsy)and Seagate were happy for me to exchange the faulty drive under warranty.
I did receive a refurbished drive in return but it's better than nothing :)If you want to guarantee your manufacturers warranty, then get a refund.
