Help Me to Select a Components for My ITX Build

Hi, I’m going to build a new mid range ITX PC. I need advise on motherboard, PSU, Ram and NVMe to pair with my setup. I won’t be upgrading the system anytime soon, so I prefer good performance parts and no need for future proof or anything.

So I actually bought the used GPU already, it is MSI 1660ti gaming X. Got it for $300 and still 2 years warranty left, pretty decent I think. Here is what I’m planning to pair with this GPU.

-CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 ( I was going for the 3600x but most reviews says that the extra $50 isn’t really worth it)

-CPU cooler: Noctua NH U9S

-Mobo: I still don’t know which one to decide between the B450 and B550. Overall the B550 is of course better but I would have to pay around $100-$120 extra for it. Also, there isn’t a lot more option for b450 ITX board on the market now though. I was leaning toward Gigabyte Aorus Pro B450i

-RAM: I seriously have no idea what to pick since this is my first Ryzen build and I heard Ram compatibility for Ryzen is pretty annoying.

-Ssd: this component drives me crazy since there are so many options on the market now….I read the the other day the Adata S8200 pro is really fast (even comparable to Samsung 970 pro) and very good price. I want to get 1tb nvme if the price is good or 512gb nvme and another regular drive just for storage.

-PSU: I will add another 2x120mm Noctua fan and maybe 2 x 92mm into the case. With my current hardware, should I go for 600w or less?

So yeah what do you guys think? Any input would be appreciated.

Depending on what you're using it for I have some (I think) constructive feedback. Thinking about thermals, the noctuas are probably overkill for case fans, and a place you could save money for other components. Your CPU won't bottleneck the setup even at stock, and the included wraith cooler is more than sufficient for a non-overclocked system. You can then throw some decent cash at really good RAM which you'll be able to take with you to your next build, or a B550 as an upgrade - even for only the wifi-6 it's worth the upgrade imo (although I've read that the MSI itx MOBO is poor). For Ryzen systems, higher speed RAM is desirable for better performance so if you look at RAM compatibility the B450s are normally max 3200mHz whereas the B550s normally support way higher (eg B550-I strix max @ 5100mHz)

    • That is a great idea, getting rid of the expensive fan now and use the spare money for b550 for better ram speed and also wifi 6. The problem is the is ITX build so the case would be tiny and I'm afraid that without proper air circulation, things inside might get hot very quickly. But I might just use the stock cooler (save nearly $100) as you suggested, I can just upgrade the cooler whenever I want anyway. How about NVMe, any suggestion?

Please state which CASE you want to build this is.
That can mean how many fans, or which components will fit etc etc.

My favourite is the SilverStone rvz02 (Black with Side Mesh, NOT the stupid plastic window version), if going for an mITX/HTPC or Console Killer type of build.

        • I’m using Ncase M1.

I hear your concerns over cooling, but remember it's only really an issue if your system is being overworked - either by overclocking or running things at too high a setting. For NVME I personally run a 250GB 970 Evo Plus which is awesome, but I use it only for my OS and a couple of every day programs due to it's size - then I shucked a 10TB Barracuda for games months later when I had the cash. I just built a system using a kingston a2000 which in this use case works just as well; just don't use the REAL cheapies that are as slow as sata (eww)

I'm considering a black+white theme ITX now. For case:
        1. Fractal Node 304 ($133-$140 inc del) with 3 quiet fans included - likely choice
        2. Nzxt H210 ($127+del) with 1 fan to replace
        3. Plausible Lian Li for ~$149 w glass wall. Handle could be useful
        4. Thermaltake S100 is new but looks decent and takes mATX

Rest of spec depending on deals:
Asus ROG Strix B550I Gaming (or Gigabyte Aorus x570 Pro)
        Trident Neo 32GB 3600 C16
Gigabyte Aorus 1TB PCIe4 NVMe SSD (expensive but tempted to see how much difference 5000gbps makes)
        Galax RTX 2060S
Corsair SF750 PSU (would like a cheaper small option but nothing good out now)
Noctua NH-D15S offset cooler (may use Wraith Prism for now)

Intention is overspeccing a little now to swap out CPU and GPU in a year or so for Cezanne (i.e. dual GPU if viable). Not for gaming, but for productivity, dev, and media creation mostly

        • Your spec is high end lols. But It’s good since it opens up a lot for future upgrade. I have no idea why the Gigabyte board on Amazon has amazing price: the B550i just came down to $288 and X570i is only $332 now. Was going for B550i but now that Nvidia announced their GPU PCI Gen4, I’m not sure what to decide anymore lols.

          • @Long Nguyen: I did do a load of research and will run a Ryzen Pro 4650G now then upgrade to Ryzen 4900x and RTX 3070 around Boxing Day sales so needed some good components. More details here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/562880

On case, I have changed direction and going a Cooler Master NR200 white case, Corsair SF750 PSU. I can fit a lot more in that config. Had to change as Solutions by Brandon shop I bought kit from appears to be going under. Now pursuing paypal dispute. They were cheap, and I expected bad service, but now my recommendation is STAY T.F. AWAY from solutionsbybrandon.com.au

A B550 has 1 PCIe 4.0 slot + 1 PCIe 4.0 M.2 as standard. You could run a RTX 3xxx without any issue. I went for PCIe 4.0 SSD and may get another also so want x570. Given price difference is so small it's a no brainer to do x570. No idea why B550 is still so expensive!

    I would suggest…

Thermaltake Core V1 case (takes ATX PSU) - has huge 200mm fan - no need for extra fans
3600 cpu - stock cooler - no need for extra
MSI B450i Gaming Plus AC mobo
    G Skill Ripjaws V 2x8gb 3200mhz CL16 ddr4
Any SSD - maybe Samsung 860 or 870 - NVMe is not really worth it IMO - you can add later if you want
    CX550M PSU from AU amazon

Appreciate your suggestion, but as I mentioned in the post, this is mini ITX build, So I don’t think your list would fit.

        O M G

The core v1 is a mini itx case.

Every component I've suggested fits that itx case.

        Do some research.

        • My bad, I just checked that again. Thanks again for your reply :)

  • I think Ryzen plays pretty nicely with RAM these days.
