Gaming PC Build Advice

Hello Gaming,

I need advice on the parts I have chosen for my first Gaming PC Build. I have gone through some sites and based on budget chose these parts.
Please advice if anything here to avoid or to change.

I am not into Gaming, it's for someone special as Gift. I am from IT background with some assembling experience.
Mainly for Fortnite Game

I wanted to keep around $1.5K, this is bit overshoot my budget.

Thanks.

Edit 25/082020 10:20: I finalised this one, considering all the comments from you guys.. basically by changing the SSD and removing Wireless Card, I have upgraded the Graphics and Motherboard.. and with ebay PIN10 I think can score all these around $1.6K.. any last minute advice before I start placing the order.

Again, can't thank you enough for all the help so far.. 3 cheers to OZbargain.

Firstly, good on you for getting someone such a great gift!

I might take a quick look around for parts a bit later to make sure you're getting a good price but from my first glance I would say consider getting a slightly cheaper motherboard in order to get an upgraded videocard. The 1660Ti will play Fortnite fine but they may want to move onto more advanced videogames in the future. In saying that there's doesn't appear to be anything wrong with the parts you have chosen and this build will serve your purposes fine. I'll go a bit more in depth when I have some more time.

Yeah don't go for the 1660ti; for that price you can get a 2060 non-super. Alternatively 1660 super have also the same performance for less depending on what brand you go for, a Galax would be about 350.

edit: also don't think you need to spend 100 on a network adapter.

I've just started my search and you can get GALAX RTX 2060 for just $10 more so I would 100% say go that option. I'm going through the other parts now and I'll post a list of what I would recommend.

+1 on the network adapter from me as well =D

I've just had a look at some prices, all from the same retailer to save you shipping. I think this improves on your original build. I'm not super well versed with AMD motherboards so hopefully other OzBargainer's can assist if this isn't a great selection but I highly trust ASUS products.

This list will bring your total price to $1485 + shipping so you save a few hundred dollars and I believe I've made some good improvements on important parts.

          Galax RTX 2060 - $489

          2 X 8GB 3200MHZ RAM - $95

          Ryzen 5 3600 - $299
          https://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/amd-ryzen-5-3600-3.60…

          Asus PRIME B550M-A (WI-FI included) - $209
          https://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/asus-prime-b550m-a-wi…

(Other users may want to comment here, I only do intel builds so my knowledge of AM$ motherboards is nonexistent. Also some don't like included wi-fi but I've used ASUS many times and trust their products for high quality.

Crucial 1TB NVME - $142 (The Samsung is definitely a higher quality drive but for your needs the Crucial will be totally fine)
          https://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/crucial-p1-1tb-2000mb…

Cooler Master MWE 650W 80 Plus Gold Modular ATX - $135 (This is more expensive than your selected part but I think it's worth getting a good power supply. You can probably find a cheaper price from a different retailer but I'm trying to keep it to one place to save on shipping.)
          https://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/cooler-master-mwe-650…

          Cooler Master MasterBox MB520 RGB - $116 (Comes with 4 fans pre-installed)

@TheGoodPart: Looking at aussieprepper comment below you can save another $28 by getting the CPU from Amazon

            • +2

@TheGoodPart: I can't thank you enough for your time @TheGoodPart.. always fan or Ozbargain.. thanks

              • +1

@smart78: My pleasure mate! Also looks like you can get a bonus $20 Steam card with the motherboard and Rainbow Six videogame with the graphics card so make sure you get those bonuses :-)

                • +2

@TheGoodPart: I think the 1660 super might be sufficient really; the extra frames is probably not going to be noticeable? I doubt it will be for 34" or 144hz or 4K gaming, so likely to be 1080p or potentially 1440p but stilll able to crank out 60fps. Also better on the budget as well.

                  • +3

@gmail92: I think that if the only use case is Fortnite, at 1080p and a 60hz monitor no doubt the 1660 will do the job. For only $10 more though I would 100% be going the 2060, going by GPU benchmark it's got a 14% improvement on frames in general and 9% in Fortnite. For future proofing and other gaming (I know people love Fortnite but you ant play it forever lol) I personally would choose the 2060.

                    https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-RTX-2060-vs-Nvi…

                    • @TheGoodPart: Wouldn't be comparing apples to apples if you weren't comparing against the Galax 1660 Super though, which is about $100 bucks less. Sure you could future proof, but OP is budget constraint and gifting a full build right - It's not a what would I build for myself question haha.

The build sounds good, You can probably score a B550 board for a similar price?

Ryzen 5 3600 is currently $271 on Amazon.
    https://www.amazon.com.au/AMD-Ryzen-3600-Processor-100-10000…

Also if you want WiFi 6 there will be cheaper cards out there.
    https://www.amazon.com.au/AX905C-802-11ax-Bluetooth-Desktop-…

This one is completely up to you, you can get a RX5600XT for cheaper than the price of the GTX1660TI the 1660 super offers similar performance and should be cheaper. Gigabyte model with 3 fans is $435. Id look into performance which one runs Fornite better.
    https://www.amazon.com.au/GIGABYTE-Radeon-Graphics-192-Bit-G…

    • The Ryzen 5 3600 link.. "Usually dispatched within 1 to 2 months."

      • +1

Yea that is kind of a gamble. On other Ryzen deals people received the CPU way before the expected date. Happen to me with my ram and graphics card also i still waited a few weeks ( 2.5-3 weeks) but they came from the USA, when rona and rioting was bad.

        • I need all this build ready within 2 weeks.. Birthday gift

          • @smart78: Its probably good to speak to customer service first and ask, the seller is Amazon AU so if its in stock it should be quick.

The inner ozbarganier in me says risk it for biscotti (biscuit) lol

I would say, the SSD is a nice choice too, but for most users a medium tier option M.2 NVME SSD would be indistinguishable — many users would prefer more SSD storage than premium SSD storage. EVO 970 is definitely a premium option.

    • +1

Yeah this is a good spot to save some money without any noticeable sacrifice in performance.

PSU too: you could go for a 500W without any trouble if that's cheaper.

Another suggestion: your Wifi card is an extra $110, and your motherboard already costs $215. Can't you get a motherboard that includes wifi for less than $325?

      • My reason for external card is getting Bluetooth in this external card and also with lates WiFi 6..
MB with NIC and Wifi both are expensive and I need both options.. and having Bluetooth is handy

Surprised no-one has asked this yet (as it is kinda hard to advise without knowing) - what screen size/resolution is the recipient currently running, and be likely to be running for the next couple of years?

    • +1

don't think this matters for a budget build no?

      • $1500 is a budget build now??

        • Say it was for a 34" or 4K 144hz monitor - what else can you do with a 1.5k budget?

    • +1

I am not gifting Monitor.. so my reply would be to choose the screen size/resolution which would be support by the build.. ;)

    My personal feel is:

    • dropping the NVME drive to a smaller 500gb for a boot, and add in a 1tb sata SSD for game storage. This'll be around the same price (perhaps even a little less?) - plus an addition 500gb storage, which is important with the size of games these days (often 60-80gb per install)

    • a small change from 1660ti to a 2060, or perhaps bump the budget on this to an rx 5700 xt. (can be had for >$600 and is a more future proof card). Alternatively if you're happy with 1660ti performance, go for an 8gb rx 580. Almost half the price, and more or less the same performance.

Scracth the last comment - there's probably 25% ish boost with the gtx 1660ti

  • Go for 5600 xt instead at the same price range

  • How would a system like this run Red Dead Redmption 2? I'm considering upgrading and would like to be able to run RDR2 on the highest settings possible in around this price range, preferably closer to $1200.

My current system was built in 2011,

    CoolerMaster Hyper 212+ CPU Cooler
    Corsair TX-650 V2 Power Supply
    G.Skill Ripjaws F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3
    AMD Radeon R9 390
    ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 Motherboard
    Intel Core i5 2500K

I'm not sure if I can re-use any of these components or just go all new.

Also is there going to be new GPU's released later this year? Should I wait for price adjustments?

    Thanks all
