Adjustable Bed - Suggestions for What to Look for and Where to Go

Hi all,

I'm looking for an king single adjustable bed for my elderly dad in Melbourne. I've never bought an adjustable bed before so not sure what to look for (good brands, important features, retailers to approach, etc).

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You could (besides typical Googling) try ringing around to some of the aged care facilities and physiotherapy-type places to see what they might have to say? They must have to work with most of the brands out there.

Hi. I bought 2 Plega king singles almost 10 years ago now. They are fully adjustable like hospital beds. Look for a bed that has separate up/down controls for the back and the legs. Also, make sure the leg part has a “knee break”. This means that as the leg end raises, it starts to fold under your knees giving support. Some of the cheaper beds will just raise the legs which is mighty uncomfortable! I also bought a latex foam mattress which I find fantastic.
I chose Plega because of the reviews and they’re fairly local to me. I’ve never had one single problem from them in all that time. They weren’t cheap, but have definitely proven their worth. Cheers.

Have a search for an Icare bed on Gumtree, although no one can sell at the moment so I'd expect the prices you see are artificially low. They are very good, but expensive new.

If you want to buy new, this is from a quote on the bed I bought from Aidacare six months ago:

BEB045952 Bed - iCare - Long Single Bed - Base Only (Bed ends & Mattress sep)
    $3,400.00
BEA016450 Headboard Single - iCare Bed Range
    $326.00
    BEM469730 Mattress - iCare - IC20 Foam - Long Single
    $597.42
AAF000010 Freight Large Local <50km Standard
    $92.40

And no one hold stock so it willl take months to deliver.
