Good Microwave to Buy in 2020

We need a new buy a new microwave. What would be a good quality and value choice?

We use it for reheating leftovers or frozen meals, cooking vegetables, heating milk, melting butter. We don’t use it to cook meals.

Anyone bought one recently that they are happy with? Or done a lot of research?

Thanks in advance.

    • Thanks! That is a good price.

I wouldn't suggest a Samsung. Take a look at LG's Neochef series. It is more expensive though.

        • Thanks - I was reading through some of the comments on a deal post on LG Neochef and saw mixed reviews. Do you have one? has it been okay?

@morse: Purchased an LG Neochef a few months ago based on recommendations here and Choice review. Very happy with it. I wipe the inside out after use, ensures no moisture build up and then corrosion.

            • @DashCam AKA Rolts: Great- that’s good to know. Will check it out. We have an LG fridge that we’re very happy with. Other products are mostly Breville and don’t seem to last, so maybe we’ll start transitioning.

    I recently purchased a Breville 34L 1100w microwave from Big W.

    https://www.bigw.com.au/product/breville-big-easy-34l-microw…

It's quiet, powerful, with plenty of room inside.

If you're not in a hurry they are often available on special >$20 off.

    • Thanks. The one we're replacing is actually a Breville and I've really liked it but the inside paint is peeling with really bad rust underneath after only a few years. I think it might be as we did a whole lot of sterilising dummies for a while, as I don't remember it being an issue before then.

I've found that not closing the microwave door immediately after using it lets any condensation dry out and any rust issues are greatly reduced.

        • Good idea - thanks. Will do this with the new one so we don't ruin another.

If you have a Choice subscription this might help https://www.choice.com.au/home-and-living/kitchen/microwaves…

Thanks, don’t have a subscription unfortunately. I probably should get one.

Beyond specs and reviews, I'd have a play with the menus as some are not intuitive.

I really like the Samsung because they have a "One Minute+" button in the top right that starts the microwave immediately without further confirmation required. Hitting that button again adds to the time even when the microwave is already running. Great time saver!

Yeah, that’s definitely a good feature. Ours has a 30sec button that I use heaps.

We had to buy a new one a few years ago and got an LG. No problems with it, works well.

    • Good to know that it’s lasted well. Thanks.

  • I can highly recommend the higher end Breville One Touch Series. They are expensive but well worth the price. Do not confuse this with the old Breville you had as they are completely different breeds. The small size are usually on sale for $200-300 and the bigger ones go for $250-400.

Well, we bought an LG 42 litre, like the internal size, but, dont like that you cannot put in an exact time, for a basic example say 15 sec as 10 is too short and you know 20 sec will be too much. You are stuck with 10 sec or 30 sec or menu options. Ours is the one with the 'finger slide' adjust, havent really used that much as yet, plus it can gets heaps of moisture build up, never had that before.

  • We bought the 44L LG Neochef recently (family of 5 who cooks a lot) . Seems good for defrosting, steaming, heating food evenly etc. Havent had it very long to comment on reliability.

    • Did you manage to get it on sale? Looking to pick one of these up as well.

      • It was $240 I think from JB a few weeks back. Certainly not the best price its been but needed one quickly as our old one was dying.

  • I bought this 2 months ago after moving out https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/samsung-34l-1000w-stainless-s…

Previous one was also samsung and still working after 10 years so figured I just stick to samsung. Didnt want to think too much to just reuse the reheat function and light defrosting

  • Our microwave is no longer working and no matter what brand model i looked up or was kind of set on, one site would have a lot of good reviews then another with major issues after 1 yr.
My current one is panasonic and has lasted 8 yrs but i feel by some reviews newer ones of many brands dont last.
I know its pot luck with appliances these days you get a lemon etc but im sure most of us expect these to last years.
I have been recommend lg and some models i have looked up have been great but other retailer's etc bad reviews which then puts you off.
I will not pay for a Choice subscription this sort of free to all take about money grabbing.
Be nice to know when buying products what they say about certain items.

Panasonic and lg have been the ones i most looksd at sometimes drawn to the look of it, but its how it functions that is more important.

I was even tempted on a cheap kmart one for $99 read about these exploding or short circuit house or catching fire yet its got 5 stars 400 plus reviews.

I dont really own much kmart appliances the airfryer was a popular one ours was a tefal 5 times the prices and died 4 months of use, could do nothing as owned it for ages prior but not used. These airfryers was very hard to get from kmart as was always out of stock.

For $100 to $150 more could get a branded microwave but does not guarantee years of use without issues.

Its just strange you read reviews of something on goodguys then look on jb hifi and not so good etc.

There is an area cut out in kitchen for microwave but we not always be here so i would have to factor in what size would suit us now.
Do i need 34l or smaller, shinny silver with black is nice and panasonic i beleive in choice is number one brand you not think so the review i have read.
Lg is like 4th and neochef is highly regarded but many have had time after time repairs to the point after warranty lg did not want to know.

Maybe i should list ones i was keen on but was put off along the way by bad reviews pending where you look at. So of these models are around $200 plus so you would expect to last. And yes maybe it would.

But i always make it hard for myself these days when trying to pick the right item
