Baby Formula for Sensitive Stomaches

Our 2 week old child is currently being topped up with formula during the day.

However, our child has a bad reaction to the formula with some spewing post consumption (even after burping etc). Breast milk seems to be ok (but obviously certain issues means we still need to top up).

Whilst all babies are different, what formula do people recommend or have tried that has been gentle on babies tummy, particularly if you had to change because of a similar issue. Price is no issue.

Currently they are on Nan Supreme 1.

Thanks.

  • Congrats on your baby! First off know that alot of babies have reflux and it might take some tries to slowly find the right formula, dont be disheartened.

Our baby went through a few and we settled on Aptamil profutura and he stayed on it until around 1.5 years with less reflux problems.

Any of the formulas we tried which we were + or Gold, with extra nutrients didn't seem to sit well with our baby. IIRC we tried Nestle optinan A.R, Comfort and eventually settled on Profutura. It's often sold out, but you can order directly from their site which is convenient.

Edit: We were careful to look at the whey/casein protein ratio. As casein is a heavier/thicker protein which they use to try and settle reflux problems. We found around 60/40% (profutura) worked ok. When switching formulas as well, be gentle and do a slow transition as it might upset the baby's stomach more.

Your baby might have an intolerance to cows milk or an allergy?

Or it could be a lactose issue and there are lactose free formulas you can try as well.

Don’t think it’s lactose as the mother consumes plenty of dairy, which transfers via breast milk, where this reaction is not seen

      • Yea ok fair enough, it’s funny my wife stomach fairs better with lactose free milk even though doctors and tests show up nothing is wrong.

My youngest kids does better on the lactose free stuff vs normal milk and the older kid is fine with any milk.

        • That’s a very good point as well.

      • Even if mom comsumes dairy, you'll still probably get more problems with a lactose based formula if your baby has an issue with lactose. Could try a soy based formula, or even a partially hydrolyzed formula. You can get an extensively hydrolyzed formula but it's expensive unless it's precribed by a paediatrician.

Make sure your GP is monitoring your baby's weight to ensure he/she's growing. If there's a major issue, some babies improve dramatically with a acid suppressant medication.

Novalac rice milk is the one many turn to for kids with allergies or intolerances. It's what our doctor recommended for us and worked great

There are others that are in between that u may want to try before going there like goats milk or others (aptamil like suggested above. They also have a thickener additive for help with reflux… U used to be able to get a free sample if u call up but not sure if still available)

But id suggest u see a good gp or paed.

    • Sorry I'm just curious is the novalac allergy one supposed to taste gross? We bought a can, baby had a sip and made a face so I tried it and it was disgusting! I don't know if we had a bad batch or what lol.

      • I found it taste gross
But for some reason my kid loved it

I also find most formula gross, but yes novolac had to be the worst tasting I've tried

      • S26 Gold is gross for adults. But babies love them.

    • My wife was unable to breast feed and our daughter had major issues with formula. Our pediatrician suggested using thickener too. Took a few days to get a happy combination in staying down and not so thick it didn't go in bottles (we had to enlarge the holes on the nipples in the end). Thicken is just added to the formula when you make it.

  • Try Nan Comfort. I did extensive googling for our Bub and it seemed to be the most common one recommended for touchy tummies on forums.
Edit: She's been on it from 5ish months as a top up to breast milk.

    • Thanks for the suggestion.

Currently on Nan Supreme. Did you try this prior to Comfort?

      • Unfortunately not, but other parents experiences on forums such as babycenter.com.au, essentialbaby.com.au, huggies.com.au meant I didn't have to :)
        Maybe I got lucky?

  • It could be over feeding. How much formula are you topping up each feed?

    • Baby is bottle fed expressed breast milk and then formula, so we know exactly the volume of consumption and it is not in excess of what she should have, in fact it’s less

      • Our kids were bottle fed as I couldn't feed - it is not really possible to say how much they should have comparing breast vs bottle - breast fed babies don't have their volume measured.

Saying this - I know it is really difficult!

  • Wife changed to Nan Supreme sometime when baby 4 months , the powder feels sticky, baby didn't poop for a week and once she did, the poop looks very dark. She switched back to Optipro. Regularly around $22 but supermarket/Amazon/Chemist Warehouse sell regularly to $17.

  • Perhaps check in with the doctors, nurses etc. that have been assigned to you by the hospital. But just because baby is bringing up bottle milk doesn't mean they have an allergy. At 2 weeks old their stomach is tiny and is very easy for them to throw up after every bottle.

  • try oli6 goat milk formula
    https://www.chemistwarehouse.com.au/buy/82647/oli6-goat-form…
sometimes on sale at $30 from chemistwarehouse or coles.

  • My first needed formula top ups - we used what was provided at the hospital and had no issues (Aptamil HA gold stage 1).

HA is easier to digest - some regurgitation is normal at that age though nothing to worry about as long as they are doing enough wet nappies and putting on weight. Bit of extra info on HA formula below

  • we had a lot of issues - best we found was organic goats milk:

Apparently it's the closest to breast milk.

  • My 1st had the WORST colic….screaming and the vomiting. As you experienced, not with breast milk. I was pumping due to issues after his birth which kept him in an incubator for a week— bottle only meant he wouldn't breast-feed afterwards.

Anyhow, the doctor just said, "oh, that's just an undeveloped digestive system, it'll get better". Well, it went on for weeks and I was worried. I switched him to soy milk.

Less than a day later, he was fine. Happy. He could sleep. We could sleep.

    Try soy milk.

PS: when our daughter was born, I put her on soy, as well. Today, both can have dairy.
