Supplier Only Willing to Exchange Faulty Secondhand WRX Gearbox

Hey guys, here’s the story:

I purchased a second hand gearbox for my WRX yesterday and the mechanic installed it today. The mechanic then told me that the gearbox is actually faulty. There are lots of whining noises coming from the gearbox.

Supplier is only willing to exchange the faulty gearbox. Is there anything I can do to cover myself for labour or have I dug myself a hole? If so, then I guess I have to pay for labour twice…

  • What were the details of the gearbox. In good working order. I would expect straight swap from supplier, given you already have to pay to have it remived and then en re installed with another.

That's how it is, it would have specified on the invoice that warranty is parts only. Sometimes you can buy labour warranty as an extra.

That's the problem with using used parts, and supplying them yourself.

Edit - oh, "member since 10min ago". I fell for it

Was the whining coming from gearbox or OP?

Yes you have and yes you do!

As you purchased a 'part only' so that is all they need to replace is the faulty part.

If you purchased supply/fit, then they would have to pull it out and replace for free.

The only thing you can do to cover yourself for labour is to DIY.

  • That is unfortunately for you if you did not read the terms and conditions, normal and has been for years.
No standard warranty is the norm although only exchange and only on some items only.
Some other exclusions included non qualified service persons performing the work which can null and void even the basic and usual 1mth 1000k exchange on for eg your transmission.

In 40yrs, and after 100s of Jap exchange motors and boxes, from recollection 95% were all good first time. You have just drawn the short straw this time.

  • 2nd hand parts you are stuffed. If you'd got the mechanic to source them he would have had to eat the poo sandwich.

  • Depends where you got the box from.

Usually they have some warranty for labour. Maybe half price you paid and exchange of box is normal
