I highly recommend 7 wonders duel. Honestly it's my favourite 2 player head to head game, and much more tactical than the larger version. Just be aware that it's very aggressive (as are all 2 player games) with very strong elements of zugswang.

How so? It's part of tactics, forcing your opponent to make undesirable moves. Many boardgames feature this, including of course chess.
This is my favourite 2 player board game. A mate and I have been playing for over 1.5 years weekly. Definitely worth it if you can get over the minor complexity.

The game is fun, but after a while it's a little frustrating how certain card choices are forced in-game. The expansion supposedly adds a mechanic to 'fix' this.
I agree! I simply refuse to buy an expansion in the current times where it can cost more than the base game.

I think that ranking probably flatters it a bit, but this is definitely a very nice little two player game, especially if you like the theme.
