  • Does anyone have tips on how to prevent the powder coat from coming off. Reason being a friend has something very similar and the coating has come off in certain areas (more commonly where the u bolts are) and they rust.

no way around.aluminium is best bet.

      • Aluminium is rust free, but not as strong. Just put a small rag between the U bolt and tray for extra protection. They already come with padding, but a little extra will ensure no damage.

  • Can you bqq a cow on this?

  • Good value for $150, but I suggest considering this type for a little more (currently on sale for $239). https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/ridge-ryder-ridge-ryder-…

Stronger, more aerodynamic (so quieter as well), and better tie down options with thick upper and lower side bars.
Very similar in size to OP's one (the Ridge Rider is a tad bigger and deeper). I have one when the Holden wagon needs to turn into the Griswold road trip warrior- love it!

When I was researching these a few months ago the ridge Ryder ones had the worst reviews. Much more likely to rust.
      Prorack a much better brand

I agree that Prorack is a better brand… but it's also more expensive a brand when comparing apples with apples.

The link I posted is a hybrid tray (some thin mesh like OP's, and some larger bars for more strength and tie down points).
Prorack have a similar tray with thicker members, but its more expensive again. They don't seem to have a middle ground hybrid option.
It's either the thin metal basket (OP's one) or a full metal thick carry tray.

At a given price point, there's nothing wrong with the Ridge Ryder option.
Clean deep welds at the joints, and an even powder coat on top. Hardly rust bucket/poor review territory.

I just wanted to provide a middle ground option after purchasing one not too long ago, as I think $80 more is worth it to the next step up from a thin wire basket.

But like I said, if given the option I'd definitely take a Prorack over a Ridge Ryder if they were priced the same. Seems like a better brand.

All good info. I just remembered that what swung me away from ridge Ryder apart from reviews was the second hand market. Heaps being sold and all looked a bit rusty. Prorack ones I saw were in better condition, and there were fewer available. Could have just been the market at that point in time though.

@Loracks: Completely agree. In regards to secondhand stuff, I'd probably go Prorack over Ridge Ryder too!
