[Free] Langotto: Learn a Language The Right Way

TLDR: Check out Langotto.com the language learning website I just made! For my purposes I've genuinely found it better than Duolingo/Memrise/etc.

Last year I started learning a bit of Spanish… and to be honest I was underwhelmed by the experience. I wanted to get to the level where I could read the news, learn about the economy, watch sitcoms and fully feel immersed in another culture, but I knew that even another year of existing language apps wouldn't get me there. So I started dreaming about what my ideal language learning app would look like…
And that's how Langotto.com was born. It's the language app I always wanted to use.
How it works:

  1. Find something you want to be able to read and add it to Langotto
  2. Learn each word individually
  3. When you understand each word then read it
  4. Langotto remembers what you know so next time you add content you don't have to relearn anything

To find out more check it out at https://langotto.com/ ! It would mean a lot to me if you signed up, told friends about it and upvoted my submission on ProductHunt (link in comments).

If you like it, hate it, or want it to support a new language please let me know!

Langotto.com fun facts:
- Langotto is the only language learning website that supports learning 30+ languages from 30+ other languages(1) which is more than 1,000 times more courses than Duolingo
- Langotto has survived a Russian Cyber Attack(2)
- Langotto can handle more load than the 2016 Australian Census website(3)

Footnotes:
(1) It may exist but I couldn't find it. Supporting all of these simultaneously isn't within my server budget but message me whatever combo you want and I'll add it.
(2) The IP address originated in Russia. Yeah I also don't know why they did it.
(3) Based on my own load testing and the claimed load testing of the Aussie government.

    Do you have Japanese?

And you've got a quote on your website, the last part, and its a quote from no-one. Just a quote.

I wish you success with this. Learning a second language is very valuable.

I just added Japanese along with a few other popular languages then :)

      Thanks!

    The website looks professional.
Please remove the exclamation mark from the URL in your text because it removes the hyperlink so I spent a minute hunting for it (I don't like reading walls of texts).

I also don't like signing up for things randomly. Can you put an example of how it works on the homepage (screenshots).

    • I put a space after the exclamation mark, thanks for pointing that out.

That's a good call! I'll add that soon

      • Does the website support sentence structure? i.e - in French adjectives are placed after nouns.
In french you would pronounce "I ate a apple red" in order to say "I ate a red apple".

        • Yeah. The way it works is you input a sample text (e.g a new article or childrens book) and it teaches you the words one by one and lets you know when you know all the words in the text. This allows you to pick up on different sentence structures in other languages in a more natural way.

          • @dannyeei:

The way it works is you input a sample text

How does that work if you want to learn Japanese? If you don't know how to type what you are reading.

            • @onetwothreefour: Copy and paste. For example I'm learning Spanish so I'll find a Spanish children's book or news article online and simply copy and paste from that

              • @dannyeei: OK so if it's an actual children's book, a paper copy, you can't copy and paste.

                • @onetwothreefour: You could use Google lens to take a photo of it and turn it into copyable text

                  • @dannyeei: thanks, I had a go and didn't really understand it or couldn't really see any benefit in it. Say for example if I add this to a snippet:

                    こんにちは、わたしはアリスです

It will give you the translation in English but that doesn't help me if I don't know how to read the Japanese characters. Also, I'm not sure how it can tell when you have learned the words, do you have to tell it when you have?

  • I'm surprised that the website did not appear for me when I typed Langotto into Google. I don't want to sign up yet, is there any example information for people to view before deciding if to join?

    • Another thing is that if we don't have source material, but are interested in learning the language in general, will this be useful?

    • When I type it into Google (on incognito) it's the 4th result, unfortunately given how search engines work it'll probably be another week or two until it's the first result. The link is in the description (langotto.com).

Just the landing page at the moment. For all the mainstream languages we've got some suggested readings so it's useful even if you don't know what you want to learn

  • Any plans for Polish? Great website, liking the everything so far.
