Gifting My Husband a Bottle of Liquor. What Should I Get?

Hi everyone.

Fathers day and my wedding anniversary is coming up and I want to gift him a nice bottle of liquor.

Trend of bottles being bought the last few years are The Kraken, Sailor Jerry, Monkey Shoulders and Makers Mark which he all has with coke, I think.
My budget is max $180. I don't drink alcohol at all so any advice on what to gift him that's similar but not those bottles would be very helpful.

What would you recommended based on his liquor trend?

Thank you

I wouldn't spend $180 on a single bottle of anything that is going to be destroyed with Coke, Maybe 6 bottles of $30 plonk :)

    • That would make sense. A few of his usuals could be another option .

    • What's wrong with mixing anything with Coke anyway. If you think Coke is going to overpower what is basically an engine degreaser, then you're wrong. It'll taste like whatever it is mixed with Coke. The stronger you mix it the more you'll taste it too. And you'll for sure smell it, there won't be any escaping the taste of whatever spirit it is. Mixing something with Coke is better than choking on it straight, imo.

      • Thats where youre 100% wrong, a good whiskey should not be mixed. A drop of water, and cooled potentially if not neat.

If youre spending $180 on a bottle there is absolutely 0 reason to be mixing it.

If youre spending $30-50 a bottle theyre just about made to be mixed.

        • You'd rather someone drink a bad whiskey with Coke? Bad whiskey in Coke still tastes bad. Good whisky in Coke tastes good.

          • @AustriaBargain: Jack and Coke tastes fine.

Glen Fiddich, Lark etc without coke taste great.

Yeah if he's not (yet) a whisky drinker or doesn't have an appreciation of sorts for it then I'd suggest getting him a whisky loot subscription rather than a single bottle of something. This way he can either decide he likes something, or not, and hopefully enjoy the process! I have to warn you though, once someone gets a taste for it, it can get awful expensive! :)

My wife and I enjoy sampling whisky from wherever we travel to (I drink most of it but she enjoys the experience) and have tried a few of these whisky loot packages out, though I no longer have my subscription.

    • Very interesting and can see him appreciate this monthly package. Thank you for sharing this idea!

If you want to max out your budget, I wouldn't want to be adding any mixer to a bottle worth $180, otherwise what's the point. You could try a couple of different rums - if it's going to be had with coke, a 'variety pack' might be a good option. Always ask at Dan Murphys, they're likely to help you make it easy with some good options within budget.

My personal pick is Mount Gay Eclipse, on the rocks it's pretty smooth.

    • There's good reviews on it too. Like one of them said, 'can't taste it with a mixer' so this might be the ones he'd drink on it own. Cheers.

    Crown Royal,
    Captain Morgan’s spiced
    Jack Daniels honey
    Wild turkey honey
No point spending a lot on a bottle as others have mentioned, based on his back catalogue and if it’s being mixed.
Maybe buy a couple of heavy base tumblers, or some sphere ice moulds, to go with it.

  • A bottle of Cordon Bleu.

    • $234! Maybe for his 40th Birthday

  • Wild Turkey, but get the 101 or Rare Breed. Contrary to what all the Whisky snobs say, you can tell the difference in quality and taste even when mixing it, although the Rare would be best with least amount of coke as possible, preferably on ice.
Having said all that, go Wild Turkey 101, a good in-betweener.

Makers 46 at first choice will spin his wheel, $60 at the moment, https://www.firstchoiceliquor.com.au/spirits/makers-mark-46-…

    • Ah, shame it says no stock in VIC. Will keep an eye out for this one. Thanks

Ron Zaccapa XO is a very good drop and good introduction to finer Rums

+1 for a good rum. If he’s mixing with Coke he’s probably got a sweet tooth - rum is a lot sweeter than malt or blended whisky he wouldn’t be likely to need to mix a good rum with coke. Plantation XO Rum also very good and under budget.

Or if he has a really sweet tooth there is a plantation rum infused with pineapple
