I'm looking to replace my normal portable HDD (2tb) with an SSD. I've seen that you can just turn any SSD into a portable ssd, is it cheaper to do this?
Is it cheaper to buy an ssd and turn into into a portable drive compared to buy a portable version?

make sure you do your research as not all enclosures are the same, and some are prone to overheating.
IMO if you are happy with SATA speeds, just get a Samsung T3/T5 or equivalent. Easier and doubt it'll be too different in price (with sales and all).
Are you referring to an NVme SSD? Yes, you can pop it into an enclosure, typically USB-C and use that as an external drive.
